Please bare with me here. I have always owned playstations since I was a kid. I'm in a dilemma where I need a console to help wind down in the evening. I'm not a heavy handed gamer, not as hardcore as when I was a kid. I bought a ps4 last year but sold it as I wasn't overly impressed and also did not have the time to play.

My friends swear by the Xbox one but family swears by the ps4. I need pros and cons of both. I do understand that the Xbox one is less powerful but games such as forza really interest me. The media side does as well but being familiar with the ps4 I'm tempted to get another. I do feel I will be disappointed again and with MGS coming out in September it's a tough decision.

Need advice to be honest as I feel totally lost.

Not interested in the wii u.

I've got both, if you want Forza, you will have to get an XB1

(Below is just a personal opinion, not looking to create a fan-boi flame war)

I personally feel the OS on the XB1 has improved a great deal since it was launched & is better to use than the PS4's (in terms of functionality) whereas the PS4 OS hasn't really changed & is missing some key functionality

The multi-platform games I've tried are noticeably better looking on the PS4 though (mainly GTA5, BF4, Batman AK)

I do prefer the XB1 controller though

I'd say for media playback they seem to be fairly evenly matched (admittedly though I normally only stream videos from my PC)

As to which console to buy. I'd still base it on what your friends use & which has the games that most appeal to you

Who is online more? Your Xbox owning mates, or your Playstation owning family? And which games do they all play?

It's simple enough really. You just need to work out where you're going to get the most online play time. Not much point buying an Xbox to play Forza if all of your mates play Halo and Battlefield. Likewise, it'd be silly to buy a PS4 if your family is rarely online.

Friends on Xbox all play Fifa games which do not appeal to me or cod. Family plays cod etc on ps4. I mainly want to buy single player games such as farcry, gta5, batman this is where I'm unsure which console to buy.

Is there anything like kinect sports on the ps4 using the eye camera or not?

IMO the differences between the 2 overall are pretty insignificant. Both have pros/cons so it depends which pros really interest you, and which cons really put you off.

PS4 seems to be best for multiplats, and it also has more interesting exclusives (to me).
Xbox no doubt still has the best online system though - PSN does the job but has it's problems at times (like last weeks slow download times).

I went PS4 because all my mates agreed on it so we had the same console. We mostly play multiplat games so for that, the PS4 was the better option.

Wackjobs (or fanboys as they are sometimes known) will argue back and forth but for 90% of people, it really doesn't matter all that much and both will do the job perfectly fine.

I wouldn't think too much on it and just buy whatever you feel like you want the most.

There are plenty people here to game with on either machine so the social side is sorted if you're into that.
For the games you list, PS4 seems like the better choice...but it's not like the games run or look like crap on the Xbox One...there will be a difference but it's not a difference I'd personally care about from what I've seen.

Sounds like you should just base it on exclusives.

forza, gears, halo etc vs uncharted, god of war etc - and look ahead at what new exclusives are in the works. new Ips, sequals and what not

So in a nutshell, you're unlikely to be playing online with anyone very often?

Get the Xbox. You've already mentioned that you want to play the Forza games, and to be honest, the Xbox One has the better lineup of games currently. That situation won't change much until next year - most of Sony's big games are due 2016/2017.

But he wants to play mainly 3rd party titles that run better on PS4, so it is not so clear cut.

Is Forza a strong enough reason to play ropier versions of other titles you want to play. Even with the PS4 performance advantage some games don't play as well as you might expect, I wouldn't like to think what they are like on X1.

For me, I like Forza and I would buy a X1 for it in the end, when a good cheap bundle drops, but I would primarily use Ps4 and am happy to have both and have a console that sits there not being used.

Get whichever one your friends have
And if you don't play online get the one with the most games that interest you

I have both
I prefer XB1 due to me loving Forza series, besides Xbox future games lineup looking really good.
I got new console fairly cheap tho,was deal in Argos for 239.99 + free game
Im gonna put PS4 in a box since i didnt touched it for a long time,or might even sell it if soon GT7 wont be anounced

Oi - this isn't the place for reasoned and well put opinions re. which console is best!

Have the cash? Get them all

Just want one? Are you a single player gamer or multiplayer?

If it's single then get the one that has the games exclusive to it.

If it's multi then get the one your friends have.

i think you also have to look to the future

monthly updates from xbox , miracast and stream games to pc (which if works well will be huge) release games for the next year look so much better than the ps4 line up .

Basically the xb1 just works fine and is great media hub aswell as a game machine.

i dont get this the ps4 looks better , if it all about gfx for you and fps then my advice is dont buy either and get yourself a pc .

That post is a bit presumptuous. Just because some multiplatform games run sub-optimally on PS4 doesn't mean the Xbox One version will automatically run worse. There are more than a few cases where the opposite has been true.

We'll have to agree to disagree on your main point though. I don't agree that a small increase in visual fidelity is a strong enough reason alone for buying a PS4. There has to be something else. I'm currently considering selling my Xbox One and buying a PS4, but that has more to do with most of my mates owning PS4s now. I'm missing out on much of the multiplayer fun (which is, IMO, the single most important factor, followed by the games).

Quoted as incorrect and to make such claims is misleading.

As an example...

To quote Eurogamer, regarding PS4 and X1, Arkham Knight: "From top to bottom, these two versions are otherwise identical. The resolution difference is the only aspect that divides the two visually, and both deliver results eerily close to Epic's 2011 demo."

Additionally it is well known that the X1 has far better media functionality and compatibility than the PS4. Does it have Kinect, nope. Does it have hdmi passthrough, nope. Does it have windows 10 streaming, nope. Hell you can't even play many mkv files on the PS4.

Why would the PS4 have kinect? That's like me saying does the XB1 have a Play TV, Vita compatibility or PS EYE/Camera.

HDMI passthrough is crap it degrades both PQ and audio quality.

Again MS make the xbox and they make windows 10, so that is why it streams it and the ps4 doesn't.

People should choose a console based on what their friends play online and what they think offers better value for money. Not crap like kinect or HDMI passthrough.

that shows the pros and cons of both consoles very clearly

"The expert views

For me it comes down to the variety of games, and PS4 has that sewn up right now. You can play all the biggest games on both consoles, but if your tastes are eclectic, Sony's indie and in-house lineup is irresistible.

Matt Hill - Editor, Gizmodo UK

PS4 for me. The majority of multi-platform games run better on it, the PS Plus subscription service serves up a stream of good, cheap games – even better if you also have Vita and PS3 – and it looks nicer in the living room. Is that a valid reason? Damn straight it is.

Sophia Tong - Global Editor in Chief, GamesRadar

I have both because I like having options and access to everything (I even own a Wii U). For me it's about the games, but if I had to choose I do like the Xbox One's interface more because I can bark commands at it.

Hugh Langley - UK News Editor, TechRadar

It has to be the PS4 right now. Between PlayStation Plus, PS Now, Vita cross-play, and the promise of Morpheus, the whole PlayStation ecosystem feels like it's growing into something truly terrific. That said, don't get comfortable, Sony - the Xbox One is definitely beginning to close the gap."

Most people seem to agree the PS4 is the better choice that is why it has outsold the XB1 considerably everywhere including it's own home market the US.

It's very relevant when someone is comparing media functionality.

Also HDMI passthrough does no such noticeable thing.

Having TV integration via passthrough and being able to control and entire home cinema setup via voice is brilliant and offers something that the competition cannot.

I assume you saying that he should get a X1 as his friends have them and it offers better value for money, considering it is cheaper and has more multimedia functionality.
