Hi Guys,

I am looking for some sound advice regarding these two systems, I thought I had made my mind up until my mate recommended the I7 980X now my head hurts trying to decide which to build.

AMD System

Asus ATI Radeon HD 5970 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
AMD Phenom II X6 Six Core 1090T Black Edition 3.20GHz (Socket AM3)- Retail
Asus Crosshair IV Formula AMD 890FX (Socket AM3) DDR3 Motherboard
Corsair Dominator 8GB (4x2GB) DDR3 12800C8 (1600MHz) Dual-Channel Kit
Crucial RealSSD C300 128GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive
Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache
Pioneer DVR-S18L 22x DVD±RW SATA Labelflash ReWriter
Corsair Performance Bundle.

Price: £1887

Intel System:

Asus ATI Radeon HD 5970 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Intel Core i7 980X 3.33GHz (Gulftown) Extreme Edition (Socket LGA1366) Retail
Corsair Dominator GT 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 16000C8 (2000MHz) Tri-Channel Kit
Crucial RealSSD C300 128GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive
Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache
Pioneer DVR-S18L 22x DVD±RW SATA Labelflash ReWriter
Corsair Performance Bundle

Price: £2578

Is the Intel I7 that much more superior to warrant the price hike?

Looking for guidence and experience of these 2 CPUs

Cheers

the corsiar ram isnt good enough to warrent the price you could easily get 6gb for 120-140 which will do the job more than fine

What RAM would you recommend?

Sorry the board is Asus Rampage III Extreme Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard

I will have a look at the 5870x2

Thanks for the input

Go for the AMD rig, as you will have 8gb ram to help with the video work. Ok the intel is the faster chip but no way does it warrant that price difference and 2gb less ram.

They are both very very good builds.

The intel would be better but the AMD would still be a beast.

You would gain advantage of hyper threading for the video work.
But six cores on the AMD is still beastly.

Put it this way do you want:

A really good top of the range computer with an extra £700 in your pocket.
The best computer money can buy at the moment with no extra money in your pocket.

£700 (to some) is a lot of money.

Also correct me if I'm wrong but, the Intel would overclock waaaaaaaay higher than the AMD because AMD's recommended max temp is around 65 degrees and the intels is around 80-90.

If you're going for a black edition CPU/extreme CPU then you really should be looking to Overclock.

that sums it up pretty well. It is like buying a ferrari/lambo - you pay a lot more for a little more performance. Out of those two, I would probably be buying the AMD build. But I would definitely compare to one of the lower cost i7 CPUs.

Thanks guys for all the input, I had kind of set my mind to the AMD as I have always used there CPUs. I will be overclocking the system but I wanted some opinions as to the benifits of the Intel. I know its a faster CPU but I still think the AMD will do all I need it to do and more.

Once again thanks to all
