A mate has asked if I can help with his problem. Since updating his AOL software before Xmas, it constantly locks up on him. Even after a reformat, he is still having problems.

I said I knew he could use AOL without the supplied software, but I have never even seen it or know how to get around it.

Is there an easy to follow guide anywhere of how NOT to use AOL software ?
Would be handy if I could send him some links on how to do this.

Thanks (as always) in advance for your help... :D

Get a router, or use the quick dial program, its basically an icon on the tasbar and it dials up without using the AOL program.

Sorry - what is the quick dial program ?

As I said, I have always avoided AOL, so I haven't seen this software at all.

Hi Pinkeyes, I take it he’s using the AOL router?

I’m not too sure if this method will work using the supplied router it works perfectly fine using a belkin & there’s no AOL software in site :D

The first step would be to create a new AOL user using the software/website it’s not recommended using your account for the settings,

Enter the routers configuration screen, Select PPPoA Interface, then just follow the image below and it should be setup, an easy 2mins guide :p

Guide in my thread here if using the Voyager modem, but if using the Netgear Router all you have to do is go to the config page, choose the automatic setup and then in about 5 seconds it will ask for username/password, put in his AOL username/password save it, thats it all done, if the router however was used before with the software, then just reset it (the router), so it goes back to defaults, then do the auto config so it sets itself up, which takes about 5 seconds as said. :)
