notebook to tv audio issues

I have a HP notebook that i am trying to link to my LG TV. i have linked via VGA from notebook to TV, this allows me to see the screen on the TV. My issue is with teh sound, i queried with PC World re the audio. they advised I would need 3.5 jack from notebook to TV, this has not worked. Any ideas ? I do have HDMI slots at the back of the Tv but not on the notebook.

Which model TV and which port did you connect the audio cable to on it? On some TVs you need to use the menus to select the audio source.

Make sure the audio jack is connected on the headphone port on the notebook, and the audio port on the TV should be right next to the VGA port.
