Noticable increase in performance

Depends on the resolution, if you're playing at 1280x1024 don't bother, you'll see maybe like a 10fps gain. On the otherhand, if you play on larger resolutions such as 1920x1200 or 1680x1050 you will get a good boost in fps and it'll be worth it. :D

pretty good. I went from a 8800gtx to a gtx 275. Very noticeable jump in performance. Anywhere between 50-100% :)

Currently playing at 1280x1024. I'll be getting a new monitor, so will be @ 1680x1050 :) I don't think my current card will handle it too well.

i'm running a 8800gt at 1680x1050 and everything is fine - well left for dead and company of heroes. Just turn down the aa to x2 and it's like a new card!!

Seriously i'd wait until you have the monitor and see what you think then. Play with a few in game settings you may find you can live with not having everything maxed out. I know i have been able to.

This.

Save your dosh for the next-gen DX11 cards.

Unless you have loads of disposable...but then you'd be looking at a GTX 295!

yea im sticking to my 8800GT 512mb for the time being, i looked at the GTX 260 cards but they wont push forward enough to justify the outlay at this moment in time.. roll on the next gen mid range bargains!

There's only 2 games my 8800GT struggles with at 1920x1080, GTA4 and of course Crysis. Try it first, it might surprise you.

At your res I'd say stick with it. At 1920x1200/1080 I found a noticeable improvement going from an 8800GTS 512 to a 4870 (anywhere from 20-50% with early drivers on the 4870 which made a hell of a difference for some games), HOWEVER, as you play at lower resolution, your overall framerate will be higher anyway, so the difference will not seem as pronounced.
If you are unhappy with the performance of your card and can feel it bogging down playing the games you enjoy, by all means go for a GTX260 or a 4870/4890 (whichever has the best price: perf ratio at the time, as prices are fluctuating a lot atm), but if you're happy with performance, wait til the next round which is due in the next quarter most likely.

at 1680 x 1050 I went from a 8800gt to 8800gts 512 to 4870 512 to a gtx 260 216

I saw major boosts in every upgrade.

My GTX 260 overclocked is somewhere between a gtx 280 and a gtx285 so almost as fast as the fastest single core gpu you can buy.

That is one hell of an upgrade from a 8800gt and you won;t look back.

And they are a bargain atm.
