Noticeable lag when access server files from W8.1 PC

I recently built a new PC and moved from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1. On Windows 7 when I access files on my server they would appear instantly, i.e. the folder contents. However access the very same server on my new PC running Windows 8.1, I have to wait several seconds when I click on a folder for the contents to appear. I am using Intel Gigabit cards on both machines and both are running at gigabit speeds with Jumbo packets enabled at both ends.

What can I do to diagnose the problem and get the contents of folders appearing quicker? :)

I've still got this issue. I just accessed a folder that I get a massive lag on whilst having the Task Manager open and I found that NOD32 is causing the lag because its scanning the files in the folder before Windows is able to display them. Are there any settings I can change in NOD32 to make it quicker to scan or am I limited to turning the scanning of network files/locations off?

I'm still suffering this annoying issue. The drivers for both PC and server are latest according to Windows' own checks. I can't see any W10 drivers on Intel's site for the CT Gigabit Adapter.

I've disabled Flow Control on both devices to no avail. I'm unpacking a 7Z file from my server to the same folder. It's a 52.6MB folder and took just over 7 minutes to unpack fully. Write speeds dropped to 268KB/sec which is ridiculous considering my home network is fully gigabit.

My PC is connected to a gigabit switch which is in turn connected to my main gigabit switch. I keep wondering whether or not this is the problem but nothing else is using my desktop switch so I doubt it.

I've tested the network speed using Totusoft's LAN Speed tester (http://totusoft.com/lanspeed.html) and that came back with good speeds but did freeze when both writing and reading the test file.

I did set NOD32 to exclude the network drive from exclusions but that didn't work. I've just tried disabling NOD32 and that improved things a lot; not quite perfect but much better. Does anyone know of any settings in NOD32 that might be to blame? I'm going to post on Eset's forums to see if anyone else has had this problem.

I think I may have found the problem but it doesn't really make that much sense. I moved all my files to another hard drive thinking that the old hard drive was perhaps getting old and slow. When I moved the files to the newer hard drive the options had been reset from tiles to details view. I noticed that the lag had virtually gone. When I put the view back to tiles view the lag came back. Considering that I have a gigabit connection and the tiles view is just loading up the icon for each program I'm a bit confused as to why this would cause the lag.

Is there anything I can do to have the tiles view and not have a lag?

Role files? They are just normal executables of programs I use. 7-Zip, Adobe Air, Adobe Reader, CuteWriter, Dropbox, EAC, EMDB etc. Just my miscellaneous programs that don't fit into any other category such as being Microsoft or Piriform programs.

of files *, (role was a typo on my phone)

Asked in case they are video files, could be a thumbnail cashing issue

Ah. :) No, just 41 *.exe files and 5 *.7Z files. Largest *.exe is 141MB and largest *.7Z is 30.6MB. Windows reports total folder size as 1.00GB exactly!

There is a sub-folder containing other files that total 2.56GB but those won't be seen until I open that sub-folder so those icons shouldn't be interfering.

^Try moving that subfolder out for the meantime. Explorer does look inside subfolders. When in non-detail view, it will be looking for folder art etc..

Also try turning on all hidden/system files, might be an odd Desktop.ini or Thumbs.db causing problems.

Moved the sub-folder and tried Tile view in main folder. No difference to how long it took.

Turn on show hidden files. No files appeared such as a desktop.ini or thumbs.db.
