Just so we can see how much better the SandyBridge chips are I thought it would be a good idea to start a Nova Bench results page, the bench mark can be downloaded here http://novabench.com/download.php .

I will start things off, Q9650@stock speeds.

941 Total
419 for the CPU

So to test how good the sandy bridge chips are you want people to run a benchmark that also scores their GPU, Ram and HDD speed/capacity?

Why not use fritz, cinebench or any other CPU bench?

Rig as per sig (oops, just realised i've changed that) but the i5 was at 4Ghz, may do a 4.4Ghz run later.

i5 @4Ghz
GTX 480 OC'd

can you not crop? lol

Not being disrespectful to the OP as a good old comparison is always good, but this "benchmark" isn't exactly the greatest. For a start, balb0wa got a higher RAM score than me because he has 8GB as opposed to my 4GB, despite the fact that my RAM is clocked faster and has considerably higher throughput!

Ah well, cest la vie. The below is with my CPU @ 4.4Ghz.

You can turn all other tests off if you chose, it doesn't matter which bench is used really aslong as we all use the same to compare.

Without GPU test (CPU Test Remains the same):

HDD and RAM performance still run.

Ram is Dominator GT 2000 C7 (7,8,7,20)
HDD is Corsair Force 60GB

And with that, I think we need a different test. That RAM is frankly awesome, is triple channel, attached to an enthusiast platform and should destroy my dual channel budget RAM at 1600Mhz yet my throughput is apparently better.

I would suggest SiSoft SANDRA as it is generally a better synthetic test but I am aware that not everyone likes it. Any other ideas for comparing these new chips to the older gens?

It's a pretty ridiculous benchmark to be honest, you earn a bundle more points just for not partitioning your hard drive :/
Indeed, it reminds me of the old sales tactics used by high street tech retailers to peddle their wares. After all, all 1GB GPUs are the same, right? Never mind the quality, feel the width!

That said, are there any synthetic benchmarks that are actually worthwhile, honestly, aside from just making sure your system is working to spec? 3DMark06 is hilariously CPU limited, 3DMark Vantage was a PhysX showcase and screwed ATi users, 3DMark11 doesn't like anything that isn't an Intel i series for 2 of the tests, PCMark has always been hilariously broken and SANDRA is theoretical testing at it's finest!

Still, this is fun! Someone with a slower rig or server with 16Gb of RAM and a RAID HDD post their results, I could do with a laugh!

:D

Why bother cropping at all though? Just hold the ALT key when pressing Print Screen and it will only capture the active window ;)
Indeed, I love that feature in Windows 7!
