Hi all

I have had conflicting information around my old system and if the cpu can be overclocked

I just firstly want to state it's an old rig I don't care if It blows up or dies i purely just want to overclock for the experience and learning the procedure. Looking to build a new pc for occasional gaming in the near future anyway.

I've read forums stating people have unlocked the bios to this motherboard which had a very basic bios setup on the build initially as it was a retail hp computer. There is no bios update to this machine either i have read since 2010 as america trends ( think that what they called) stopped supporting hp prebuilds right after this model came on the market

So i am confused as i have also read people overclocking this chip to 4.2ghz on similar motherboards

So my question is will i need to override the bios somehow to try overclock and stress test ect or can i just use a windows programme like throttle to change speed voltages ect?

my spec

i5 @ 650
8 GB RAM 10600 (4X2GB STICKS)
250gb harddrive
radeon 7750 1gb (ddr5) gpu
generic 300w psu which came with the retail build back in 2010

Motherboard MS-7613 (Iona-GL8E)

  • Form factor: microATX - 24.4 cm (9.6 inches) x 24.4 cm (9.6 inches)
  • Chipset: Intel H57 Express
  • Memory sockets: 4 x DDR3
  • Front side bus speeds: 2.5 GT/s DMI
  • Processor socket: LGA1156
  • Expansion Slots:
    • 1 PCI Express x16 slot for graphics card
    • 3 PCI Express x1 slots
    • 1 PCI Express x1 minicard slot

Most people overclock using the BIOS so if unsupported on the motherboard it's unlikely to be a useful activity.
I'm sure you'll have much more fun overclocking your future build, the motherboard is key.
