Now I know OCuK don't really do mass-market and budget....

....so here's a challenge:

A PC including monitor (if poss 17" TFT) for as close to £300 as possible.

A few guidelines/minimum specs:

1 - It's a Chrissy pressie for a 14 y/o girl.
2 - It doesn't need the latest fastest kit.
3 - It needs WinXP - discount from the budget if you're struggling.
4 - It'll be used for homework, internet and (most importantly) MSN <sigh>.
5 - CDRW is sufficient.
6 - 64bit? Maybe will afford some future upgrade-ability.
7 - May need to run some games, nothing too graphically demanding, probably stuff 12 months old and perjaps a late driving game or two.
8 - 512mB RAM.
9 - 10/100 on board is fine, wireless card ability - on board sound will be fine too, perhaps 5.1?
10 - AMD or Intel, it's not important.
11 - USB ports.
12 - Possibly TV-out. Suppose it's possible to fit a TV card that'll pick up Freeview and output to her TV??? Dunno about this really, maybe this'll go to future upgrades.

Here's a caveat. I know you're not to mention competitors, so I'm not going to. BUT, other people can do such a system. Frankly, I'd rather give my hard earned to Overclockers (as I will soon do for my own system) as they are conveniently (a) excellent at what they do and (b) just up the road from where I live.

So, is it possible?

Best i can do really.

For gaming you have never been able to get a full PC for that budget, gaming PC starts at the £400 tower price range really.

Looking at min res and min settings on most games in that last year or so on both those rigs, but saying that been playing WoW on my old Athlon GF2 Ultra rig just fine all morning.

The integrated 6100 could at least play some games and you'd have a reasonable processor if the graphics were upgraded to something like a 7600 GT.

It's as close to your budget as I could get without dropping things that you/she wants. 17" TFT and 512MB RAM as well as semi-decent integrated graphics. Just noticed you mentioned wireless card ability. I took that as could be upgraded to one in the future as you wont get one at this price included.

I can understand your on a budget but buying a cheap PC really isn't worth it considering a few hundred (I know I speak of that lightly) more gets a much better PC which lasts. This PC won't last very long at all and imo.

Better off trying to buy everything 2nd hand imo.

I dunno, I think some of these specs look pretty good for the money :) I like the idea of a mobo with a PCI-e slot but with onboard 6100 gfx - seems like a good way to keep the cost down right now but give options to upgrade in the future if it's not quite up to scratch :)

A USB DTV tuner start from about £20 if she wanted to watch TV on it.

That one seems good enough. Not everyone needs the latest processors and lots of memory as that should happily do most things which is thrown at it to do except gaming :)

A little over budget, but does INCLUDE VAT, and a 17" LCD and has a PCI-E slot if she wants to play games later, not to mention has a DVD Rewriter in the price, not just a CD Rewriter :)
