Now this is FAST!!!!

we've already had a topic about this before on the forums... and these gigabyte ramdrives are already comercialy available, they cost about £60 each then you just need £40 of budget memory to plug into them and then you have a 4 GB drive.. they plug into a PCI slot but only to draw power. they actualy transfer data via an SATA cable which means you can have a machine with 6 PCI slots and RAID 6 4GB drives together to make 24Gb drive... but i find windows will fit comfortably on an 8Gb drive.

as long as you have windows on the RAMdrive you'll get the speed and you can just put all your program files and My documents on either a Raptor or an SCSI drive.

but i'd never seen quite how quick it could make a system, that video is OMFG AMAZING!!!1one now i'm seriously considering it!

and as for the power going off.. if you have a fast system it's not hard to reinstall Win XP again, and it's best to do a total format of your C: drive at least once a year, it's like changing the oil in your car!

£200 is way off.

When Gigabyte announced it they said it would be around £70. They haven't really mass-launched it yet. It is only really available in any quantities in the US and Cananda. It is available for around $130. There are some limited quantities available from some obscure companies in the UK but they seem to have priced it up over £200 because of this.

I got one on auction for $110! Should be here next week some time. I have a spare 512mb PC2100 stick lying around so i'm going to put my favourite apps or those that take ages starting on to it (firefox, open office, zonealarm etc).

It is only really expensive if you intend to buy 4gb ram for it as well.

Also, I heard that Gigabyte are working on an I-Ram 2 which will support DDR2 and SATA II 3.0gbs which will make it even faster. Maybe thats why they haven't really produced a lot of I-Rams.

i think, this in a desktop system designed for windows XP MCE would really benifit from it, i mean, i'm all for useing a computer as a TV and hi-fi system or a home cinema system too.. but they just take too long to switch on!

i mean, the only time i switch my TV on is when somone phones me up and says "omg DUDE! you gotta' see this on [insert randome channel here, preferably men and morots] it's so omfg, amazing!" but... if i was watching it through a computer, by the time it's booted the so called amazing thing would be long gone.

they are not commercialy available in the UK, anyone know/estimate when they will be available in the UK

Yep, they said from the start that it was a bit of an experiment to see if there was enough interest in the product. It'd be nice to see more battery life in the next version, or at least a matched 'extra' battery option, but i guess with the desktop and my docs etc stored to hard disc it wouldn't take long to restore a 1 Gig Ghost image to the iRam and with no data loss.

Saying the following may pour petrol onto the fire but here goes....

Why don't microsoft just release the OS on a cartridge device that you can plug into a PC, or better yet do a deal with a mobo manufacturer so the OS is already there when you turn it on...

Just a thought

my board boots with one pass of the loading bar - it's very possible on a ram drive but like i said, no matter how fast it is that bios is unnaturally fast. so are the GFX when in windows.

I'm guessing you've got a raptor raid setup?

Good idea, but then when you turn it off for too long you'd still have the default OS back wouldn't you?

Craig.

i'll second that as a GOOD idea o_O' i mean... it does have it's problems.. you cant upgrade it, but you could have it firmware upgradable o_o' and you could indeed load it onto something equaly as fast as a ram drive and have it plug into a PCI slot or something

it's not like you dont get preloaded software anyway... you can get norton applications and unix all on flash memory all pre installed so there's nothing stopping Microsoft, but out would have to be a cartridge :( cause you'd have a flash drive, a firmware section, an interface, and some other stuff to make windows work right x_X

How about Windows Vista (USB) on a superfast USB stick or something, it could then have adequate space to store the setup info, then you could combine it with a normal HDD and BOB's your uncle. Roll on fast boot up's.

This very discussion is similar to one I've been having in my head for around 2 months and will probably go with 4 x SATA2 drives for speed etc. COS if there's one thing that drives me nuts while using my PC it's Boot Ups, Multi tasking, transfering files from 1 drive to another etc.

Now if only microsoft could actually get their timings right with the transfer wizard etc. LOL
