Looking for some advice with an ongoing npower issue...

They've been my energy supplier for the past 2 years - We got the first 3 months for free...Wait, no, not for free...There was an admin error on their end which resulted in no payments being taken. Slated them on Twitter and the issue was quickly rectified with a bill adjusted to accommodate the missed payments.

When it got to the end of the first 12 months, my energy bill doubled...Okay...perhaps they've seen how much energy we use and adjusted accordingly...no questions asked - Despite the monthly sum being ridiculously high for the size of property we live in.

Fast forward to today, I've received a letter which states there's an outstanding balance, due to admin issues, of £2000. We've only been paying x amount, whereas we should've been paying more.

First issue with this, the amount stated in the letter ISN'T the amount we pay monthly, it's HALF the amount we pay monthly - I have the last 12 months statements to back it up.

They've also stated that an extra £120 will be taken out of my account for the foreseeable future to cover this cost...

Short of threatening legal action, slating them online and going to the press, how difficult a journey is this going to be? I'm not paying a penny.

I was paying £140 a month for a small 2 bedroom bungalow with nPower after they undercharged us for a year without actually telling us. As soon as we paid off the balance I left and went with Spark, haven't had any issues since and our bills are cheaper

I will cancel my account tomorrow but there's no way I'm paying the outstanding balance.

I've went through my direct debits with a fine tooth comb, there's been periods of fluctuating amounts, some with a big difference, some standard. I've also had zero correspondence regarding price adjustments and my meter is rear regularly.

Ask them for a statement of account showing all charges, credits and payments applied to your account along with all meter readings used and tariff details that demonstrates the account balance is correct.

I'd get a statement but at the end of the day you needed to keep an eye on your payments vs you usage. It does go up and down but sounds like you've not been paying enough for quite a while. I don't think that exempts you from paying the bill though and at least you have the option of paying monthly til it's cleared. Try to leave and they will want the full amount

I've had so many problems with yo-yo monthly payments.
The best one I had was £500 monthly!
I live in a 2 bedroom house not a bleeding factory :/

I also want to leave but I'm worried they'll bill me for a massive final payment :(

You can't leave if you have a debt with them - they refuse to transfer the service. We had this after 3 years of silly payments. 1 bed flat with two of us working 24/7 so barely at home and they reckoned we used £120 a month gas & electric and wanted to put our DD up to £180 to cover "debt"

When we finally got to the bottom of it after a long complaints process we were somehow £800 in credit!!

Now with Ovo and pay £60 a month for a 4 bedroom house (still two of us) and that works out over the course of 12 months.

I never trusted Npower to even know what they were doing or give me correct information.

I've been arguing with them for years and because we have a 'debt' with them cannot transfer.

I literally have no idea how they are still in business. They're the worst company I've experienced.

Unfortunately I'm moving house in 6 weeks so have no choice but to leave. I'll wait and see what they say to it tomorrow but given what they've went through over the past couple of years, you'd think they would be bending over backwards to please and keep customers.

I get the 'not staying on top of your account' argument however, if and when I needed to pay up, the price was adjusted to accommodate. The size of the property against the bills are stupidly disproportionate. Hell, my grandmother has a house twice the size, electricity on non-stop(as a pensioner always home) and still pays much less.

To quote yatzee they are "pants on head retarded". I owe £1500 according to their solicitors, I ask why being I'm paying monthly, they increase to £1800 because of a bill reversal. Ok, payment agreed to £140 a month, they take £68. I ask why? They increase to £2100. What is going on? They increase to £2400.

Something to quote them, based on a potential gaff on their part talking to me, is the UK Code of Practice for Accurate Bills. They are a part of it, and assuming you are doing your part they are not to back bill for anything over 12 months old. In my situation, they have currently reversed 3 years worth of bills because of the issues. My expectation is for a bill of only 12 months. Perhaps an unfair expectation, but every single quote of balance, and even DD amount has been different I just feel they are pulling numbers our of their behind.

EDIT: I want to make it clear, I have zero issue paying money I owe. The issue is they cannot tell me what I owe, the number changes everytime I ask because of reason X, Y and Z. Give me a bill, accurately, and I will gladly pay you off and move to pastures new.

I also had a similar problem with them (not charging for over a year.... All I got was 10% knocked off the bill :X)

To the OP do you have a digital meter or a old style dial meter? When they sent you the revised bill is it to actual readings or estimates?

Npower are a shambles. They got a mahoosive fine for this exact issue recently. Ring them up and get your COS read from when you started with them (or from when you moved in) and take a reading now. Calculate the number of units used x unit price, add that to number of days you've been supplied by them x daily standing charge rate, less total payments and shove it back in their face once you've done it. Bet they're way out.

We get loads of customers switch to us that are on prepayment and never had a debt with them, suddenly after leaving they'll get a bill for £800 or a random figure they've estimated usage on. One customer the other day went from owing 300, to being 500 in credit, then owing them 100, owing 800, owing 550.. All different bills within several weeks!

Wrong. I left Npower 2 years ago with £1,000 (allegedly*) outstanding on my account. Did a transfer to Ovo (via uSwitch) with no issues at all.

Do this.

Honestly they are the worst company I've ever had to deal with, unable to even do something as simple as take a direct debit for the correct amount on the correct date!

Booooo.. Ovo.. The bane of my life :D

Eugh, my spelling there..

I had issues with Npower as well. I submitted readings every month and despite being in credit they would keep trying to up payments significantly even though the track record of usage was no where near what they were predicting.

They kept ignoring request to bring it back to the par level so I left.
