NT06-E temps

Literally just put a silverstone NT06-E into my system to try and get a quiet pc that I can cope with at night time. Now supposedly this heatsink is good at being cooled by the PSU, and although it's not designed really for overclocking I assumed it would be able to handle stock temps.

Now I tried applying paste with a few different methods but in the end the Silverstone 'smear it on the cpu smoothly' approach had the best results.

Problem is these 'best' results aren't too amazing. Now bearing in mind this is AS5 with the 200 hours temp element.

Idle temps: 44-48°C
Load after 20 mins OCCT: takes it to 70°C in 3 mins slowly then halts test
Prime95: 79ºC after 9 minutes building up steadily before I stopped test.
GTA4: ~60-63°C

Now I can only think that the PSU isn't sucking away enough air to make this passive idea work. However the nt06 is designed for the Sugo SG01 and should work in theory.

Perhaps an e8500 C0 is too hot for it to handle or maybe my Corsair 620W fan isn't effective..

Corsair 620W is a quite psu - aka it fan spins very slowly at loads upto around 250w I think.

So unless you have a x2 card your never hit that wattage and the fan will not ramp up.

So get a thin 120mm fan and mount it on the underside of the HS wing (7v mod should help with noise issues) and you should be fine.

The alturnative is to ignore the temps and enjoy the quiet that a semipassive solution gives.
You might also be able to under volt the E8500 and still hit stock speeds (Volts affect the heat of a cpu more that speed)

What's the problem? It works doesn't it?:)

Just ignore the temperatures, they're largely irrelevant. Especially if you want a silent system.
