Ntbackup Issues

I have an issue with ntbackup which is doing my head in!

Example:

Sbs 2003, backup works fine using ntbackup and a DAT72 tape drive. Someone forgets to put a tape in one night. After this point ntbackup won't open, appears in processes but no GUI, try and access Removable Storage in Computer Management, MMC hangs. Restart the server, all works fine until the next time theres no tape in the drive when it wants to backup.

I have just recreated the ntbackup database and will install any updates to see if this helps. Has anyone come across this before?

Running as a schedule task which is never timing out?

Check there and see if it is stuck in a "Running state" when you cannot get the GUI open.

Are you RDPing on to check? IIRC when NTBackup requests a tape, the popup shows in the console, and you won't see any sign of it in a normal RDP session.

No schedule task running, rather than look at the ntbackup issues it seems to me the issue lies elsewhere, with removable storage in computer management locking up the mmc and not showing any of the usual data (tape drive/libraries).

The strange thing is the server restart sorting the issue out for a time. Do I need to restart a certain service?

you could try and pskill the removable storage service, is there nothing showing up in the event log?

SBS uses another executable to invoke ntbackup. I forget the name but look it up and see if that is still running, perhaps?
