out of interest, what is our backbone?
All this talk of 'backbone' connections is rather misleading; the UK equivalent of the Internet2 project is the Joint Academic Network (JANET) which connects academic institutions across the country. As far as I'm aware that has backbone connectivity up to 40Gbps at the moment (with 2x 20Gbps ports at LINX last time I checked), but obviously actual bandwidth varies across the network.

Of course the UK also has numerous commercial bandwidth providers with their own backbones, and we have the London Internet Exchange (LINX), which at an average throughput of 593Gbps is the third largest internet exchange in Europe :)

No idea what we're connected to.
