As above how do you change from ntfs to fat 32 in windows using an external drive, the only option it gives me is ntfs when i try to format

Windows will only let you format partitions up to 32Gb with FAT32 despite it supporting 2TB partitions.
If you want to format larger disks than that as FAT32 you'll need to use Partition Manager, one of the Acronis tools (forget which one) or a Linux based boot CD.
