Hi

i've just made the big switch to a MBP 13"

i have a 500gb external HDD ntfs formatted with my life on it. what are my options?

i have a second drive that i tried formatting on the MAC. it gave me different options like

Mac OS extended
MSDOS FAT

i choose FAT and tried to transfer some files from the ntfs disk to the FAT one but it doesnt really like it (saying the disk was full when it wasnt)

whats my next move?

:)

Install MacFuse and NTFS-3G, then you can read and write to NTFS drives from OS X.

Then either keep the drive in NTFS or format it to Mac OS Extended and put the files back on it.

FAT32 can be read and written to from OS X but you can't transfer individual files over 4GB.

If you aren't transferring files to a PC, just copy the contents to the Mac and format the drive in the native Apple format (HFS+).

Will be quicker and you won't have to install add-ons.

btw, OSX can read NTFS just not write but you can just use the native write support in leopard by doing a small command in terminal use google to find this (mac rumors has a huge thread on it)

Another option might be a NAS box which will be readable by any OS which supports Samba / AFP etc I can recommend FreeNAS if you decide to go for an old machine to do the work. Plus you could have it so you can access your files externally, share printers, host a website and so forth...

You can turn on write support in Snow Leopard - see my article here: http://www.markc.me.uk/MarkC/Blog/Entries/2010/6/18_Turn_on_NTFS_Write_on_OSX_Snow_Leopard.html

Big warning on this though - some people have reported corrupted NTFS volumes from this process. I've not experienced it though, and I use it all the time.

As for the NTFS-3g/Paragon software - Paragon software wins everytime. The performance of the NTFS-3G solution is appalling.

i used the paragon app and it seems fine, thanks

i can vouch for this.
i have an external hardrive formatted for windows.
i use both of the above for access on my macbook

HELP!!!

i downloaded paragon as suggested so i can copy files to and from my 500gb NTFS formatted drive. that was all fine until I was playing around with the settings for Paragon

I accidentally set my 500gb NTFS backup drive to be the boot device (stupid i know! my first mac and i'm still learning)

how do I get it back to booting from the MBP

is there a reset button? restore? or secret menu, cause all i get is a message saying 'choose a proper boot drive)

thanks
