Hey guys, a mate at work needs some info.

He has NTL Cable setup which gives him his TV, Broadband and Phone. He wants to be able to record the TV on his PC while it still going out to the tv. so basicly he wants to replace a VCR with a PVR.

His current PC is up to the job just minus a few bits that were not sure of. Such as TV Cards etc. Which one? What else is needed?

Any help would be great,

cheers

I think it depends on the type of NTL box he has and it requires an analogue connector, rather than digital. I've got an old Pace box and use a Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1300 in my Shuttle for recording and it seems to handle it.

I think you need two cards if you want to watch a different channel to the one you're recording?

this is his box if its any help. Am not with ntl so i dont have a clue.

Well if his TV has PC inputs he can simply buy a TV card, capture the TV realtime and run the PC display out to the TV. Not many TV's have PC input though.

Altertatively, he could get a VIVO type graphics card, which allows analogue TV signal capture via composite or scart plus a converter, then output this back out through the TV output adapter on the video card.

I've messed about with this kind of thing a fair bit, including running multiple video and games consoles in and out through a PC, the main thing I would say is that its all a bit hit and miss as to the quality of the video signal you end up with and it takes quite a bit of mucking about and experimenting, plus lots of strange and sometimes expensive cables. So if you up for spending and wasting a little money and experimenting go for it, otherwise maybe choose a simple single box non PC based solution.

I use my media center PC to record tv programs from my NTL Samsung STB like this:-

Hauppuage MCE 150 TV card
Nvidia FX5200 graphics card

Scart output from STB split into composite signal, left and right audio into the composite input on the TV card.
Media portal to record the TV input signal
SVideo output from FX5200 to svideo input on TV.

Sorted.
Now ive got a LCD i use a 6800GT graphics card and output this to the TV via DVI.

I have a media center pc for Ntl.

Scart out of decoder to svidio in on hauppage card with scart to svideo cable.
Scartcable has left and right audio connectors to which I combine and put them into the tv cards audio in.

Then use the outputs of the tv card to stick in your tv.
