Moving into a new house this weekend, and trying to sort out internet for it.

It already has cable installed, and some kind of NTL box on the wall, so I'm thinking of going for 2Mb cable as it works out loads cheaper than ADSL because there's no line rental I think?

When I sign up do NTL provide the modem? Does anyone know how I hook that up, is it via ethernet or USB?

Yes, and you can use either (but ethernet is preferred).

NTL do 512K/1Mb/4Mb/10Mb connections for £14.99/£17.99/£24.99/£34.99 a month respectively.

With all but the 512K connection I think you have to have a phone line with NTL also.

As mentioned above you can use either connection but ethernet will be more reliable. USB has little annoying problems which crop up every now and then.

Really? I was looking at their site and it looked like I could just sign up for 1mb (I meant 1mb in the original post).

They don't really make it too clear. They got some small print at the bottom which says "Offer is only available when you take a phone line".

They also single out the 512k package to specify "there is no need to take a phone line".

Also when I got NTL broadband they made me take a phone line too. That was a couple years ago though.

No you do not need a phone line as well. I have 10mbit NTL only with no TV or phone and so do two of my mates.

The small print at the bottom of the page is relating to their current special offers - where you get the connection for half price for the first 3 months. You definitely do not need any other services in order to get NTL Internet.

There doing an offer at the moment, 1Mb internet, phone line and basic cable TV package for £30 a month

1MB internet is only £18 (but something like £6 a month for the first three months), I've got a freeview box already and use my mobile for calls, seems sensible to go for the broadband only.

Edit - Does the cheap first 3 months only apply to those that take a phoneline too?

Yup i agree with that, and it is possible to have just the interent as i did it before. They give you a nice blue cable modem as well.

Unfortunately it looks that way yes:

"Offer is available for new customers and to existing customers who have TV and Telco services and are new to ntl broadband only. Not to be used in conjunction with any other offer. After 3 months price reverts to £17.99 per month for 1Mb, £24.99 per month for 4Mb and £34.99 per month for 10Mb. Offer is only available when you take a phone line."

Bit of a shame but not a major issue I guess.
