NTL Ethernet Problem

I recently joined NTL.

On install it asked for the usb connection and I wanted to use the ethernet cable. So i used that and it didn't work, so I had to use the usb cable.

I now have the internet through my cable modem using usb.

I have my TV with NTL too. When I plug in the ethernet cable instead of the usb and then reboot I have no connection.

Any ideas??

Thanks

Id have thought you need to play with the modems onboard settings - id give NTL a call - theres no real reason they wouldnt let you have ethernet connection instead (unless they're trying to push a "home network install" package which I havent seen yet). If they wont play ball you COULD take a look - pretty sure the web server on the modem is 192.168.1.100, will give you all the attenuation settings etc (yes they are still there - just not used as much) and mebbe option to play with connection.

Alternatively - might even be worth trying this first - give NTL a ring and say you'd like to add a MAC address to your connection. I know telewest dropped mac filtering in later months but not sure if this was carried to NTL if not.

Pretty sure you can do the mac address thing in the self help on the webpage too :)

Make sure your network connection on the computer is set to DHCP, hook it up then "repair" the connection - that might just do the trick :D

Lastly try getting hold of an RJ45 crossover cable and give that a whirl.

One of those should fix it :) good luck

turn off the modem, turn off your pc, turn on the modem, wait for it to boot then turn on your pc. Check that it's set to use DHCP, not a lot else that can go wrong unless you've got the wrong type of network cable or the NIC is faulty.

NTL also did away with the need to add MAC addresses to your account. As already mentioned, it should be as simple as connecting it up via ethernet then powering the modem off and back on. You always need to power off and on again when changing the device that the modem is plugged in to - even if you're changing it from one ethernet device to another.

Thanks for the input.

how do i "Make sure your network connection on the computer is set to DHCP, hook it up then "repair" the connection - that might just do the trick "

I have tried many times reboot turn off etc....

I know on the flash install it said someat about DHCP problem so i installed using USB.

Now when i use ethernet nothing happens.

how can i change the dhcp.

Thanks

Basically set connection to DHCP (you sound like you have done this already) once plugged in right click on the network connection in network properties and "repair" it just refreshes/renews the DHCP lease - might be the problem. If not I suspect crossover cable.
