Don't know if anyone has any idea about this, but my NTL modem seems to crash totally randomly, I notice it when I am surfing (in FF), a page will fail to load with the message "connection reset" then if i try to reload it it normally does it fine. Sometimes thou i have to unplug the modem and then its ok again.

Any ideas?

What type of modem is it? A Black or Silver Set Top Box (STB) or a Black/Silver/Blue modem?

Some of these - especially the black STBs - suffer from heat. Is it in a well ventilated area?

Some are "too old and slow" for the latest speeds. Try hassling NTL for a replacement.

Maybe some hints on this very useful page: NTL Cable Modem Tips

i do use peer to peer. this problem is new thou, with nothing else changing.

its the silver ntl modem.

anyone know if i can buy a wireless roter with a cable modem built in?

I use the WRT54G by Linksys. If you want advanced options you can flash this to other firmware to make it even better.

I had connection drops too with NTL so moaned at them until they gave a new seperate modem from the STB. It's only gone down on me once since, whereas the STB was quite regular.

I have a silver NTL modem, and it doesn't get any problems at all. Been up constant now for months. The Linux router I have attached to it has been up for 272 days. :)

There is one quick experiment you can try. Does the cable connect direct from wall to modem? Or is there a little "choke" screwed onto the end of it? Try removing this screw-on choke if it is there.

When my cable was first installed, it "misbehaved" in the summer. NTL sent a troubleshooter down from London. He spent most of his time swearing about the local "installer monkies" who had added this "choke" to my line which would affect the signal once the day got hot.

Also - are you connecting the modem to your PC with USB or Ethernet? Ethernet is by far the more reliable method. :)
