Hi all,

In order to get better download speeds from my NTL News server, I've been advised to try changing on my news reader the port to connect to on the News server. It's currently set to 119, does anyone know what other ports I could try please?

thats the default port for nntp, a quick look on the ntl site stated to use that one. To be honest i dont think changing port will make any difference on download speed :(

Was it someone from ntl that advised you do change it? Unless the NNTP daemon is listening on ports other than 119 you'll have no connection at all, let alone a speed increase.

If ntl is running traffic shaping then you may get an improvement using non-default ports. What speeds are you currently getting? What ntl package are you on?

it was someone on NTL:Hell forums that advised me. He seems to know what he's on about...

I'm getting like < 200Kb/s, whereas I've had up to >1,100Kb/s, I'm on the 10Mbit package.

I'm wondering though (unlikely I know) whether it has anything to do with my new USB network adapter, which is a Netgear Rangemax WPN111.

mate of mine was on plus net and using giga-news, tried changing ports to 23 and 80 for news (giga-news allows those) but the throttling was still in place, may be different for ntl though. Plus net are great at shaping :(

out of interest what port did he say to change to????

he didnt give a suggestion :(

That's strange. I use the default port 119 and on the news.cable.ntlworld.com newserver I get 490KB/s (4Mbit)

changing ports and the like is typically done with torrent apps and the like and as stated it will probably give no connection at all if you change it. I havent used a Netgear Rangemax WPN111 to be honest but if you try the newsfeed through a wired connection and its a lot faster then that may be the cause

Out of interest, what news reader do you use and how many connections have you allowed it to make?

I use newsleecher and have 10 connections. I generally find ~8 or more gives the highest speed.

I use ninan and I've currently got it so that it's allowed to use 100 connections.

Hmmm, 100 seems a bit high, IMO, but I have no knowledge of ninan. Have you tried lowering it? All the bumpf I've read over the years suggested 8-10 yield the best results. Whether it makes a huge difference or not, remains to be seen.

tried lowering it yea, its deafult is 8, tried that, 7, 6 and 10....still slow speeds. I might as well try with a cable to the router tonight...can't see how this would help but you never know with crazy Netgear kit!

Yea, that is a bit weird. I'm using the newsgroup over wireless and still get about 470KB/s. Unless of course NTL are sufferring a degraded service in your area. Has it always been like it, or is just recently?

On the NTL newsservers connected to port 119 i get 9.2MB - 9.5MB on my 10MB connection. I find the connection excellent!! I have no complaints about NTL.

what newsreader do you use / network adapter?
