The NTL man came around this morning and installed the net to my house. I have connected the modem to my computer but as soon as the modem is powered up the ready light starts flashing and doesn't stop. which means the installation CD does not work. I have rang up the NTL tech support and spent 30mins on the phone to India  and at the end of the very slow conversation he said all he could do was book an engineer to come around on Wednesday.

I really need to get the Internet sorted before then.

One of my friends said it could be that it could takes 24 hours for the net to be working once installed.

any ideas of anything i can try in the mean time to get it working?

ps. Just to make it even more annoying they also fitted TV this morning and i went for the family pack (160 channels) and i am currently only getting the freeview/basic channels!!!

if the light is flashing it means that its not adsl ready yet. Give it a few days and you will see the light go solid once its been enabled.

Possibly not the most helpful of replies, but as far as I know, there isnt much you can do.

You could try to unplug your modem/set top box, that MAY get your channels/net working, though to be honest I doubt it. There could be something wrong with your lines, so if you keep having the problem, the engineer is the best solution.

zen62619, NTL is cable not ADSL.

The flashing light on an NTL modem means much the same thing, though. It is either not detecting a signal, or it can't connect. Try turning your set top box and modem off then connect the modem to the PC via Ethernet. This way you don't need to use the crappy installation CD. Goto 192.168.100.1, user/pass root/root and see if its working. From there you should also be able to tell if it can see the signal or not, though I forget offhand which page its on. If this works then chances are the engineer didn't register your connection. Fire up IE and go to https://autoreg.autoregister.net/ and that should let you connect.

If all that doesn't work, it sounds like they have not enabled your account with the right goodness. Get on the phone and try and speak to someone who knows what they are talking about and ask them to check.

i also got tv installed today, i got 1 month free family pack then i roll onto the basic free tv package they offer (you need a phone line with ntl) and im having the same problem the enjy came about 2.00pm installed and went yet i still dont have any of the family pack channels this leads me to believe that there are delays or problems there end.

May just be a coincidence that there is a network fault the same time you had it installed.

My connection has been down most of today with the same issue but I have had the service for almost 2 years now without fault. All working now though.

Im sure you don't get the channels straight away, i remember when my sister got NTL in a while ago now, and she was told that it could take a while for the channels to come on, she just kept checking and eventually one time she checked they were on, im sure it took a while though. :)

Not sure about the net though, but could be the same if its newly installed.

sounds to me like its an issue at their end.

Short of un-plugging the modem and leaving it off for half an hour (clear any stored information like MAC address') theres nothing else you can try

i highly suspect its because its a new install, and you'll be up and running in no time :)

did you get this sorted i rang up the fault line today as mine didnt work first thing, they got me to take my smart card out and give it a wipe and reboot the box did that and all my channels came through :)

Yeah you're right about the channels. When I got mine installed the engineer told me that it'd take 2 or 3 hours for all the channels to come on and sure enough, he was absolutely right.

My cable modem synced up immediately though. I've had NTL installed at two houses now and both times the engineer got a cable modem and plugged it in to verify it was syncing alright. Did your engineer not do this?
