hi,
Managed to get myself NTL 10meg cable & have realised that my Netgear DG834GT is no good on DSL as doesn`t have the incoming/WAN ethernet port.

Can anyone suggest a cheap wired router that will still alllow me to max out my line when needed as some routers appear to limit my max speed.

Sk1n

Any 100mbit router will do - you'll only being using 10% of it at the very most :) I would recommend the Netgear RP614 Router - I've installed countless numbers and they serve me well :p

The DG834GT is an ADSL router. You mean it's no good on cable (which isn't "DSL").

I'd suggest the Linksys WRT54GL. Reasonable router for the price, and there's a choice of feature enhancing third party firmware (www.linksysinfo.org is your friend).

I had a netgear rp614 and it wasn't upto 10mb speeds from NTL. You need a router with 100mb throughput.

The Linksys WRT54GL mentioned by Tolien is very good or if your looking for a wired one I got myself a Linksys BEFSR41 and it always manages to reach the full 10mb.

I am using the RP614 at the moment, and it works completely perfectly. I still get 1200KB per second downloads, and I also can use my PC and 360 at the same time and I have not had one single problem. My friend that also has the same router and never has any problems (that is using it between 2x laptops, 1 x PC and 1 Xbox 360. I installed the network, and then updated the firmware on router). , just be sure that you update to the latest firmware on the router, and it seems to serve very well.

Another friend also has the router, just as a hardware firewall, and works perfectly for him to.

Do you have any scrap PC kit and a couple of spare network cards? Freesco is a nice little linux distro that produces a perfect little "router on a floppy" for no cost at all.

I have it running on an old AMD 586 (75Mhz) with 4MB RAM and 256MB HDD. All scrap kit from my cupboard. :) Works flawlessly.... current uptime is 380days.

(Also very easy to setup... and then you never have to touch it again) :)

I am glad yours and your friends works fine. Mine and some other peoples on here hasn't. I tried the latest firmware and everything else advised. I have also noticed that with the new Linksys router, I am able to browse the internet whilst downloading at full speed, whereas the netgear router would be very slow to browse the internet whilst downloading at 800k/sec.

The -L version runs linux based firmware that is easily user-modified. There are lots of new firmwares out there that add new functionality to the router, such as a basic firewall or traffic shaping.

I'm using the Linksys BEFSR41 on NTL 10meg, using the NTL250 Cable modem and an 8 port ethernet switch to connect to 2 network ports in every room, working a charm atm, full speeds, super-low latencies and good options overall. For wireless we're going to add a separate access point.

Thx for all the prompt replies guys,

Looks like i`m gonna get myself either a Linksys BEFSR41 or the WRT54g, depends which one i come accross first at the right price ;)

Prolly put the DG834GT on fleabay to offset the cost.

RP614 is best avoided tbh, it's real world download throughput is not up to 10mbit let alone anything faster, the WRT54GL is cracking if you fancy getting the best value for money and maxes out at about 50mbit on the WAN side so lots of room for future upgrades.

I'm sure I saw an advert somwhere about a cheap deal on a WPN824 (capable of handling almost 100mbit WAN connection) and Wireless USB dongle but I couldn't say where ;)

Does anyone know what the difference between the Linksys WRT54G and the Linksys WRT54GL is?

As others have said the L version definitely is a linux version. The G came (comes?) in many revisions which were originally linux routers, but changed in the the 5th revision. So if you get a used WRT54G (also goes for the GS) then many of those are linux (releases 1 to 4) but newer ones probably aren't.

What are users experience of their WRT54GS with a 10mb connection? Wired, mine is fine, but if I use wireless I can only get between 600-800KB/sec unlike the full speed over wired.

This was in the same room as the router, annoyingly. It's no big deal but would be nice to have it running a bit quicker.

check your mtu settings for the wireless adaptor. windows doesnt set it correctly for wireless adaptors. i had the same problem with 10mb ntl and a wrt54g

Thanks James. I'll give it a shot mate. Whats the recommended setting? I'm using the Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG if it makes a difference.

no problem:) also try 1496, though you shouldn't see much of a difference

so do most non-L's. my 54g works quite happily with dd-wrt firmware:)

I've got a version 1 or 2 (I think) and DD-WRT for some reason plays up. It will work fine for a while then just for no reason start playing up and require a reboot. I've stuck with hyperWRT & Thibor. Works nicely, but the interface and extras that you get with DD-WRT aren't there :(
