NTL speed is dreadful

for the last 2 day i have had the worst speed and connectivty ever from any internet service provider...56K is lightning compared to our so called 2MB line we are meant to have at the momnet, litrally webpages are taking over a min to even load and these are good sites such as the BBC etc. somthing now has to be done, im furious, so what should i try, is it worth complaining to NTL  spending all my phone credit on some usless call center?

im just so feed up with the poor speeds... i cant even get on or stay on the lobby in many online games let alone attempt to play a game.

could someone help me out this has just ruined my whole weekend.

i did this speed test http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
with the newyork server and got 85 kb/s download and a massive 18 kb/s
now you dont have to be a rocket scientist to know that is appalling.

thx in advance

Paulw

A lot of people seem to be getting slow speeds at the moment. I was getting 6-7 mbs on my BT line , but now my connection speed is barely better than dial up.

ah ok my mate was downloading stuff so i have stopped that now re-did the test, but im still only getting 411 kbps & 35 up still not good enough any ideas.

this has still been happen when i know hes is not dloading stuff

Use a cable and go mainline to get a benchmark. Do you have that option ?
I use an Ethernet cable and have Never had problems with NTL and get excellent speeds. Maybe your router is insecure and someone else is using bandwidth.

i cant use a cable its a shared house and the router is in someone elses room, our router is using wep encryption so its not unsequre or being used by anyone else except my flat mates

btw waht is the mainline address i cant find it on google sorry

Yes it is - WEP is insecure and very easily cracked so how do you know nobody else is using it? You should be using WPA or WPA2.

By mainline he means to bypass the router - just plug a PC directly into the cable modem - bear in mind that you'll need to power cycle the cable modem whenever you change the device it's plugged in to.

well ok so i dont know but as there is a family living next door with 2 young kids & there own net connection why would they use ours? yes there could be im not ruling that out but some how i doubt that is the problem here.

ok ill give the mainline thing ago thx

<--- confused. 2mb yet your getting 411kb/sec down and your not happy with that? you should be getting ~250kb/sec on 2mb?

When speed testing, you need to be cabled directly to your router with no one else using the connection. Otherwise you will be seeing the effect of WiFi dropouts accross the house and your mates sharing of the bandwidth.

For reference, My 4MB NTL connection gives 3260down / 314up from that NY server. Though it makes more sense to test in the UK with http://www.speedtest.net/ (though the speeds are the same, give or take 5% margin of error)

WEP does have two drawbacks to it. First it will add a small overhead to the speeds (slowing things down with the encryption). And more importantly, WEP is VERY easy to crack. So your neighbours can use it with a little bit of Googling for the crack tools. Move up to WPA for better encryption. Or find out how to check the control panel in your router to see who is using your WiFi connection.

cool thx all i shall up to wpa, i have learnt quite a bit cheers.

where do i find who is accessing our internet in the control panel. im using a linksys wireless G router.

Find the LAN section and see who has been allocation an IP Address using DHCP. You will see computer names and MAC addresses.

Go to your PC, and type "ipconfig /all" at a DOS prompt. And you will see YOUR PCs IP Address, network name and MAC address.

use mac address filtering ?

Quite worthless when it comes to wireless security - using the right tools it's pretty simple to see which MAC addresses are associated with an AP. WPA/WPA2 alone with a strong key is more than sufficient.

SMAC ***

i no u can use SMAC to spoof your mac address but not ** avarage joe noes how to do this even when they search google yeah thay will find how to spoof but not how to find the macs of a device on a wireless network

I think you're getting confused with bits(b) and bytes (B), with a 2mb line, u should be expecting download speeds in the region of 200kB/s (2000kb/s), so only getting 411kb/s is equivalent of 51kB/s (divide by 8), so there is definitely something funny goin on with your connection.

I cant comment much tho, as i have a thread open at the moment with the problems i have been having with my BT connection not conecting at all.

the biggest problem your going to face is that you've got people sharing the line

you've already posted that you were furious at the start of the post, on the point of complaining to NTL, and yet your housemate was leeching all the bandwith

you need, momentarily, to do a test with 1 PC wired up the router via a normal ethernet cable. Even if its only your roomate's PC where the router is.

With only him connected, go to the speedtest website and see what you get

if you still get drastically less than what you should ,give NTL a ring. I had this when i lived in 'boro. Turns out i was on the Redcar router, instead of the middlesborough router. So my data was down, and pings never going below 130 ish Something like this may be wrong with yours too

but untill you rule out your wireless connections, housemates downloading etc.. you wont find out much.
