NTL Stoke speed issue

Hi.

Is anyone else on NTL (and possibly from stoke) having speed problems at the minute?

I know that stoke has intermittent faults at the minute according to the VMedia website status page. But ive been on the phone to NTL and according to their speed test thingy i should be getting the full 10mb without problems.

The biggest download speed ive seen in the last week is probably 120kb as opposed to the 1.2mb id expect. Its usually less than 100k, and a lot of websites struggle to load at all.

Ive disconnected the router, ive double checked everything i can think of.

Is there anything i can try, or am i just doomed to naff speeds til NTL get their donkey-behinds and do something?

I'm getting the same mate but am in knowsley. Only seemed to start approx 7pm tonight. Will bear with it for now but if it still the same tomorrow I will be asking questions. I've just tried to download a demo from blueyonders site which normally maxes my connection out at 400kb's but am only getting 30kb's.

Helps to check the service status page sometimes :p.

Some Virgin Media Broadband customer in the Stoke-On-Trent area may be experincing slow speeds. Our engineers are aware of this issue and are currently trying to resolve this as soon as possible. Virgin Media would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused

i did check that, and yes, i saw stoke on there.

but when i rang NTL to enquire they said it has gone back to normal now, and when they tested my line they reported the full 10mb.

Stoke ST4 area at 9.45. I have not experienced any problems.

Just a word of warning...

Virgin may not have download limits, but they have just introduced traffic management on all their connections.

http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html

The management is for both their ADSL and cable connections and is being rolled out with the 20mbps cable upgrades.

Some people have found they are limited pretty much all day and some within minutes of 4pm. It's extremely iffy at the moment.

There's huge threads about it on cableforum.co.uk and the concensus is why roll out a 20mbps upgrade while admitting their network can't handle the current speeds? Simple - make good advertising.

Yeah i seen that tbh it doesn't concern me atm i have 4 meg adsl with ukfsn and the pack i on has only a 45gig limit in peaks and 200gig off peaks for £29.99, it don't bother me paying another £7 for 20 meg.

Being restricted too 5 meg between 4-12pm don't worry me at all aslong as more don't creap in, not having a cap for normal hours will be a bonus tbh and even capped it will be more than i get atm on adsl max, where we moving i can get sky broadband LLU and UK online it says but not too sure what is the best to go for.

Its going to be 6 weeks before we move so i can keep me eyes on whats going on and decide from there i guess.

have to laugh at this one

Aren't you simply trying to cut costs?
We've never believed in cutting costs for the sake of it. And we never will. We want to deliver the best possible value to all our customers – and that's exactly what we're doing. That's why we're starting to double the speed of our top broadband package up to a supersonic 20Mb

It comes down to offering 20mbit just so they can boast having faster speed than Sky even though they are cutting costs by limiting 20mbit because they do not want to spend anything on upgrading the network to cope, it would have been best just to leave 10mbit as it was, if the network was struggling at 10mbit why even bother offering 20mbit..one reason to beat what Sky has to offer and slip a traffic limit in on the Sly.

Theres been a long thread on the speed problems in stoke on the cable forums for the past month or so.

Some people have been dropping down to 56k speeds!!!!. where other people havent been affected at all. (Luckily, touch wood, I havent been affected)

For people who have had an engineer out it looks like there are upgrading some of the ubrs in stoke ready for 20mb and to sort out the speed problem. It should be fixed by the end of the week.
