Try putting the Win XP CD in the drive, changing the boot order to boot from CD first and when the XP install screen appears choose the "repair" option. This will take you into the recovery console and you can type in either "fixboot" or "fixmbr" (without the quotes). That should get you going.

i do all what you say and when i get to system repair tool i can only put in one letter  so i try and put fixboot in and all it write is f every time i try i have restated and keep trying but still the problem persits the only other thing i can think of is that my windows xp professional disk is a copy of a friends and maybe it corrupted but it has always worked before  any help would be appriciated

It shouldn't matter which XP cd you use.
Do you get the prompt to select a keyboard (I think it says something to the effect, press a key to select a non-default keyboard)
Also do you get to the screen to enter the admin password (this won't appear if there is no local admin password)

Personally I would make sure all disk are plugged in, detected by bios and you are booting of the correct disk. If you say try and boot of a second hard drive with no windows install it will give you this error.
Check that there is no USB hard disk plugged in that it is trying to boot from.
Especially careful if its a SATA disk you are wanting to boot from in preference to a IDE disk.

Ric.

i do not get the prompt to select the keyboard and all it let me wright is a single letter in the window repair tool all my disk appear to be right with harddisk first to boot my harddisk is sata so therefor it is sata master no1 while my 2 dvd drive are primary master and primary slave also i have only this one harddisk which has got window on and i have no usb harddrive attached

IIRC you have to select which partition you want to repair first, hence you can only enter 1 letter, corresponding to the partition letter. Presuming you only have one partition this will be C, so at the prompt type C and press enter. Then it may ask for a password, leave it blank and press enter and you should be at another prompt. Now type fixboot and press enter, then after doing that type fixmbr and press enter. Reboot and hopefully it will have worked.

it says it reqiure an adminastaters password i have no idea what i could be because i have put no password  on the computor any help plz

I am amazed to find this topic here since I had exactly the same problem last night at exactly the same time!! Very spooky. I still haven't been able to fix it.

Basically I was trying to partition the hard drive and the partition software corrupted some of the data so that I always ended up with a BSOD when I was trying to boot Windows. The BSOD always came before the XP boot screen appeared.

So I told the BIOS to boot from the XP disk, opened the repair console and ran FIXBOOT which told me that the boot file was corrupt, so it wrote a new one. After restarting, I still got a BSOD before XP could load. So I ran the repair console again, ran a CHKDSK [which told me that the hard drive had one or more unrecoverable errors] and ran FIXMBR. After this I got the same problem as the thread starter here - after the VMI pool data was verified - "NTLDR is missing, please restart".

I have no idea what to do now, I'm thinking I may have to format the hard drive and reinstall XP. I tried to run the BOOTCFG in the repair console but I was told there were too many errors on the hard drive to run it!!

Anyone got any ideas - this topic is a last resort otherwise I'll have to reinstall XP tonight which I'd rather not do. Hopefully we can work through this together! :p

OK I've found a couple of help pages about exactly this problem here -

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000465.htm

and

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314057

Look further down this page too... there may be something there.

http://www.techwarelabs.com/communi...start=15&sid=f86d12254d5a30ebc1408d9fa6d3ebb6

This MAY work - try it and let me know - I'll give it a go tonight.

I had the same problem, here the FIX

Boot the W xp CD, en E [or R] for repairconsole
To replace damaged ntldr and ntdetect.com you can copy fresh files from the XP CD using the COPY command. At the Command Prompt type the following
COPY D:\i386\NTLDR C
COPY D:\i386\NTDETECT.COM C
(d: = cdrom, or whatever you use)

type FIXBOOT ...

Reboot and ENJOY

Further topics here - esp at the bottom of the page.

Why don't you just look at my post above yours? That's what I'm going to try tonight. FIXBOOT didn't work for me either. Just copy the files from your XP CD.

keep me informed lysander wheter it worked

Well, I had a go and got absolutely nowhere. I couldn't even get into the admin console - if you can, you stand a better chance but I had to reformat the drive and install XP again.

XP now runs fine but I can't get onto the internet from that machine. It says all the IP information is 'unavailable'.

i ll do mine pc on saturday hope i have a bit more look than you lafyer lol
