Hi guys, i bought a second hand PS3 from ebay a few weeks back, all was ok until i went to play a dvd in it and it comes up PAL not supported! am guessing he sold me a ntsc ps3, have checked the listing and it was stated as a PAL ps3 i product description but not in his ad.

am not sure what if anything i can do regards this, have messaged him but have had no reply, am guessing either he did not know or did not want to state it.

have reformatted etc but still the same.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Chris.

Thanks for the reply, have opened a case, will see what happens, was a few weeks back so am not sure if its too late, hopefully he will reply back, seemed like an ok guy when was doing the transaction etc.

It could be an Australian machine or something, PAL with a different region code.

Actually maybe not if the error is "PAL not supported".

Well it should throw up a message about region codes being incorrect if it was that. Have you checked to make sure the TV output settings are correct? What connection are you using? If it's HDMI then PAL/NTSC regions shouldn't even be relevant.

Look at the label on the console too to see what voltage it accepts. My Canadian PS3 says 100-120v on the label underneath (even though it works fine on UK power with no stepdown). If yours says 220-240v then it's a EU console unless it's been gut swapped.

There might be a barcode or serial number somewhere that will confirm which region it is? I know the games are region free after being stitched up with a chinese Uncharted 2 a few years ago.

edit:
On all models of the PS3, the last seven characters of the serial number make up the console's model number. This begins with "CECH", followed by a letter indicating what model the system is. The last two characters of the model number indicate what region the system is from.

If it ends up being Japanese they are worth a lot :)

Is it still the case that on the Jap models that square defaults to jump and 'X' defaults to fire or something like that and there's no way of swapping them apart from re-wiring the pad.

Hi again, thanks for all the replies, just had a look at the bottom of the PS3, model is CECH-2001A and is 120v which would suggest American for sure, i looked at it yesterday and did not even notice the voltage stated!

Oh well, still no reply from the guy, it all works fine, just cannot play dvds.

Cheers.

Chris.

Your thinking about the actions of the circle and cross buttons being swapped around which is still currently used.
