Expat in the USA
Hi,

I'm from the USA, visiting my inlaws in the UK. Since my arrival, they've been receiving nuisance calls from 0845 and 0843 numbers. At really annoying times also. 10:30pm as an example.

I've told them to register on the do not call registry.. But they're still coming thru.

Is there anything else that can be done? In the USA, if you're on the do not call registry, and receive these type of calls, you can contact a no-win-no-fee attorney and receive a decent compensation.

Is there a similar service in the UK?

Or any other suggestions ?

I assume your mean they are registered with the TPF?

If they are, and are still getting calls, then those callers are breaking the law and you can makes complaints against them. Telling the caller you are registered with the TPF and they are breaking the law is usually enough to stop them calling back too :p.

Edit: as anticonscience says, I think theres a 6 month lead time to allow phone lists to be updated before legal action can be taken.

Edit Edit: oh, checking the site it says its only 28 day, which is much faster than I thought it was.

Get them to register on there, it won't stop all of them but if they're elderly like my parents then they can get a call blocker which connects between the phone and wall and which means callers have to press a number for the phone to start ringing, it stops a lot of auto-diallers and has a built in block list of known junk callers.

Did I hear somewhere that the TPS registration only lasts so long then you need to reregister...or is that not true?

I registered many years ago, and it seemed to work for a while, but I currently get a lot of spam calls again.

Do I need to renew my registration with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS)

If you have registered a residential number or a number belonging to a sole trader or (except in Scotland) partnership, you do not need to renew. However, if you have registered a number on to the Corporate TPS belonging to a Limited company, Plc or other large organisation, you are required to renew annually. In this case TPS will send you an e-mail each year to notify you of this. Failure to renew will result in your number(s) being removed from the CTPS data file. Please be aware that if you change your telephone package, obtained broadband or change telephone line service provider for example, we may receive notice from your current/old line service provider that your line has been made inactive. In this case your number would be removed from the file as the service is only intended for live numbers.

Probably worth checking with TPS, but if you are still registered, time to start logging dem complaints!

Used to have to register every month (up to about 6 months ago), it's now a one off.

Does this also cover mobile phone numbers?

The TPS can accept the registration of mobile telephone numbers, however it is important to note that this will prevent the receipt of marketing voice calls but not SMS (text) messages. If you wish to stop receiving SMS marketing messages, please send an 'opt-out' request to the company involved.

I've just seen on the TV, a program that's showing regarding this very subject.

Monday 8pm on 4.. Dispatches.. How to stop nuisance calls.

Here is a list of the last 10 numbers that called.

0843 6546680
0845 6021111
0843 6546731
0843 6546139
0843 6546997
0843 6546730
0843 7243086
0843 7243129
0843 7243072
0843 7241052
0843 7242041

I get calls most days... one at about 2:30pm and one pretty much dead on 5pm. Caller ID says they're international and withheld numbers.

Being on the TPS does nothing about these. They're not interested as they can't do anything about it. I have reported quite a few cold callers to the TPS though.

Once I had an argument with someone about whether they were allowed to call me as they weren't "selling me anything". She gave me her name and that went to the TPS too.

Get's right on my ***s as I work from home.

Just block 0843 numbers on the phone, they aren't used by normal businesses, they use 0845, 0870 or 0800.

It's not the cheapest solution but a trueCall would definitely help them.

It's only for landlines though and a rip off price. And Jesus that website is ******* horrendous!

You can get apps on your phone that do similar things, for a few quid or possibly free.

What an annoyance. Luckily we don't have much of this in Ireland but we do have premium message services that subscribe you without your knowledge and take all your credit. Dunno how they get away with it.

Any businesses worth their salt use 03 and proper 01/02 geographic numbers along with freephone numbers these days.

SayNoTo0870 put rest to the 087/084 premium rate scam.

I agree I wouldn't be paying £100+ for a call blocker. Rather put up with them or put phone on silent.
