I was just up in the loft part of the extension on my house, trying to put in a new layer of insulation to keep me a bit warmer when I stumbled across the following down at the end of the building up against the wall..

Sorry for the crappy quality photos but they were the best I could do while hanging half in the loft with a torch!

Is it what I think it is? A massive wasps nest!? It measures about a meter and a half across the bottom!

What are the chances of there being any wasps in it this time of year? I absolutely hate wasps so really don't want to be working up there if there are any about!

new house + arson charge :D

On a more serious note, smoke bombs, wasp spray, the whole chebang. That thing is HUGE

I doubt there are any wasps in there now. Best bet is to call in exterminator. We have them every year, I just let them be tbh. But since the size of the thing is huge, get on phone to the council.

Looks like a very large wasps nest, if it is apparently worker wasps die out in the winter time and the Queen hibernates in the old nest or they construct themselves a small hibernation cell.

If this correct, best time to get rid of it is now with all this cold weather. Have a search on the internet just in case I am wrong!

u might just have missed them as all the wasps here seem to be dead now but theres like 20 inches of snow lol damn scotland :D

If it's cold enough they should be hibernating. Beware sleepy wasps, they sting easily. But this time of year is the best time to deal with it - get the council or an exterminator to remove it while it's cold and the natives are less restless.

Good news is that it looks more like a wasp nest and less like a hornet nest.
