Number plate query

Im looking at buying a run around while the G60 is off the road, problem is that the owner will be keeping the plate as its a personal one.

If i went and bought the car this weekend what would happen regarding the number plate?

Will the old plate go on? Will i have to re-register it and wait god knows how long in order to get it?
 
please, someone here must have some clue as to how this works!!

I dont believe no one knows :)
 
The old plate goes back on iirc. I think he'll have to contact the DVLA and sort it out before you get the car.

When I bought my e38, I had to goto the DVLA office in Shrewsbury with my cars documents to get my "new" number put on.

The car had a private plate when I bought it, but, like you, the owner wanted to keep it.

Its the same principal with either the old or a private plate, you'll have to goto your local DVLA office and they will issue you with the new number / or the cars old number plate (if it was wearing a private one).

Clear as mud. :p :D
 
Surely if this other person takes the plate off of the car then he'll have to tell the DVLA and a new plate will be issued to the car as part of that process. I mean if he doesn't inform the DVLA that he wants to transfer the plate off of the car doesn't that mean you can run the car around with the private plate on it because you technically own it, until he transfers it.
