Number port gone wrong?

I ported to 3 yesterday.

I've ported lots before, what always happens is that my old SIM card loses its signal. I put the new SIM in. I get a signal. Number ported. Hurrah.

This time it hasn't worked like that.

The port took place yesterday but my previous SIM card still receives service. As does my new one. If I call people from the 3 SIM it shows my ported number as the CLI. Same if I text people.

If people text me, sometimes it goes to my 3 SIM. Sometimes it goes to my Virgin Mobile SIM. If people call me, sometimes it rings (If they are calling from 3). If they are calling from another network they get Virgin Mobile voicemail.

I called 3 who told me 'the port can take 24 hours' and that I should 'call back tommorrow' (Which will be 48 hours).

The whole thing seems to have gone quite wrong but I'm not really sure what to do. Virgin claim it's nothing to do with them.

Is this... normal?

not quite the same thing, but when i moved from a standard sim to micro sim on 3, i had about 48 hours without any service on either sim, so put it down to them being a bit plebbish

This is not normal. The porting process has broken.

When I used to work for 3 porting was undertaken by the MNP team in Reading. Customer services will have no idea how the process works but they will raise an incident for the MNP team to resolve. In my non expert opinion Virgin(T-Mobile/EE) have broken the process which is why you're number appears to be on both networks in partial form.

You'll have to wait until Virgin/3 sort it all out.

When you explained the problem to CS they should have created an incident for the MNP team to investigate.

I worked on supporting the CS systems, so I had access to the scripts they follow. Back then your explanation should have triggered an incident to MNP. I am assuming the script hasn't changed and that the person you spoke to was competent enough to follow the script.

If you're not happy call back and insist the issue is investigated as the port has clearly failed.

When I ported from Voda to Giffgaff I found that I had varying levels of service on both SIMs as well, although it resolved itself in a few hours.

When I did it, I had no service straight away on the old sim (O2), and told everyone to just use Facebook messages. After about 48 hours, the number seemed to have moved to Three effortlessly. Did have service with Three the whole time though.

I moved from EE to Three in October. It took a little while longer than anticipated and for a while I could use data on both SIMs but by the time my EE signal died, everything was up and running on 3.

It's not uncommon, I port about 30 times a year and this happens on about 10-15%. You can usually force the issue a bit by restarting the A device (the system that takes you off a network is waiting for your phone to stop doing billable actions before it ports you - the phone will say bye to the network and trigger the process) while leaving the B device off/in airplane mode.

This happened to me when I migrated from Ovivo to Three. They called it a "split migration" and it was fixed within 24 hours of me reporting it to Ovivo.

This saga continues to drag on. Virgin Mobile insist it's nothing to do with them and therefore won't do anything (Which may be true). 3 have 'escalated' it to the MNP team but it 'could take some time'.

Outstanding.

Not sure if mine was exactly the same problem but I had a recent issue with Three when I had to swap SIM cards with them for one reason or another.

I found that my number would either show up as my original number which was ported over to the new SIM or sometimes as the "new" SIM's number that should have been replaced!

Which number shows up in the "My Phone Number" field in the settings because mine was still showing as the new SIM's number?

I fixed mine by borrowing a mates i-Phone, put my new SIM in it, edited the number and saved it and when I popped it back in my Nexus 5 all was good!

As far as I can see there is no option on the Nexus 5 to "edit" your own phone number whereas there is on an i-Phone!!

Like I said, not sure if this is precisely your problem but it does sound similar!

Phones don't really know their own phone number - it's not really of much use to them (but it is to the user). Editing can be done in Android but it requires root/mod iirc.

When a phone joins a network what's really happening is the phone is a conduit to allow the SIM to be authorised on the network first and then the device is allowed to do things over this secured session. At the same time the phone is given a special number so that the network can recognise it when it asks to do things later like make a call.

The phone gets told to accept this incoming call or switch masts etc. - it's addressed by the magic number. When a device is making a call it asks the networks to dial a number but it just says "im phone <magic number>, i want to call XYZ. The receiver sees the call ID because the network the dialing device is attached to added it to the call.

You can dial *#100# on some networks and you'll get your number back if you want to see what the network thinks you're assigned. When you PAC what's really happening is your SIM is having it's associated telephone number updated on the huge database each networks use. This is why PACing is really fragile - it's an old system and needs overhauling.

interesting thread

i ported my number from t-mobile to 3 on 13th March and not had anything back from 3 yet as to when the port will happen

i filled out the online porting form, any ideas how long it takes? their site says next working day if form is submitted before 5pm Monday to Friday

i submitted at 6pm on Thursday, so does this mean my port will take place on Monday?

i did a number port from tmobile to ovivo a few days ago and that went a smooth as it could go, next day and it was done with an email to let me know too!

Hmm, two days ago, I ported my number to a new micro sim.

I was aready from three however.

I just went to: three.co.uk/simactivation and it was done within 30mins.

Call them up and mabye they can see on the system what the problem is.
