I've never ported number before, so am a n00b at this :p.

From what I understand I ask my old carrier for a PAC, which then within 30days I give to my new carrier. My question is, do I have to have requested it in advance from the old carrier and then give it to my new carrier when signing up with them? Or can I sign up with the new carrier, get a new random number from them, and then request the PAC from my old carrier and give it to new carrier for the number to be ported over - thus having had a week of a temporary number before the port was done?

And does using the PAC within 30days from the old carrier terminate my contract? Or do I request PAC, use PAC, and then call to terminate?

Cheers!

Olden days... carriers required the PAC when getting a new contract. Now, networks allow you to port over a number at any time - but do double check with your network just in case they are still living in the 90s.

A network will usually only give you a PAC code if you are out of contract (or within 30 days), and so once the PAC is used the contract should be terminated.

I would generally phone both companies to ensure these details - just because sometimes the monkeys can get it wrong.

Can anyone confirm, can I port my number to GiffGaff, even if I don't use my GiffGaff SIM for months on end, will I keep my ported number, or do they cancel a SIM if not used?

What network is it dude? Different networks have different policies around porting PACs and their time scale to do so,

For example, O2 let you do it whenever you want, Talkmobile only let you do it at the point of sale.

You can request your PAC before hand and give it up to the new provider, once your PAC is used it automatically cancels the service of your old provider and relevant costs if any will be invoiced to you, generally speaking this is taken via Direct debit.
