Just noticed after riding in this morning that yet another mod the previous owner has done has been to fit a very nice third party numberplate holder. Which allows for the smallest numberplates lol.

Now, I have a choice between the still legal (text still the same size) 7x6" or the pushing it illegal 6x4"...

What you think?

I think mine is 6x4" and I have never been pulled in 3 years, although I think a lot of it depends on the area. They don't seem that fussed here in Oxfordshire.

Looks 10x better than the dinner tray sized standard one.

Ordered a 6x4" one, hopefully should arrive tomorrow :)

Police around Reading are very relaxed to be honest. My 748 wasn't exactly silent and the 1098S sounds like a bloody drag racer at full chat and I have yet to be pulled lol.

9"x7" is the legal size, unless you've got a private plate with less numbers/letters you won't be able to fit everything onto a 7x6 plate.

Mine is 8x6, small enough to look neater but not too small that it attracts attention.

The size is only illegal when the font size is lower than standard.

On my last and current bikes I went with 7" x 5.5" plates. Smaller characters but still in the correct layout/aspect etc.

I've been in a group of bikers that got pulled for one of them having a tiny plate and my plate wasn't mentioned at all :)

But if you use the legal size font, legal gaps and legal borders then 9x7 is the minimum size you can use. There simply isn't space otherwise.

Character Height 64mm
Character Width 44mm
Character Stroke 10mm
Space between characters 10mm
Space between groups 30mm
Top, side & bottom margin 11mm
Space between vertical lines 13mm

There is an error in the diagram, vertical spacing between groups should be 13mm as in your text. That gives total height as (2*11)+(2*64)+13 = 163mm = 6.4"
