I'm having my bumper resprayed and figured it would be a good opportunity to smooth it and have a plate that doesn't screw in. What's the best options these days? Someone mentioned that you can get magnetic plates now? I was just going to go down the double sided tape or velcro route!

Used double sided foam tape before. The foam gives it some give that helps it stay stuck. Just try and get some decent stuff.
Many cheap knock offs about nowadays that would not hold a paperclip.

I bought some Tiger Tape just the other day for this very thing - good recommendations off friends and it's made in the UK if that matters. I've found in the past some of the 3M VHB pads off ebay just didn't hold long term. I suspect some were fake and not really 3M despite stating it.

I've since decided to go with Wurth plate holders.

I've not had great results with 3M VHB (assuming genuine) in general including number plates, double-sided tape in general is so hit and miss. Picked up some Tiger Tape recently but not got around to using it, the Unibond strips I had seem to hold for now.

Personally much prefer screw in plates.

Harris number plate tape, I've done 6 cars with this and no issues..

However, just about anything mentioned above will work! Just clean the area first with something suitable..

Genuine 3M VHB is incredible stuff - it'll pull the backing off the plate long before you'll get the actual adhesive to give way. Getting genuine 3M stuff seems to be getting harder and harder though, took me a couple of attempts last time around to get some.

For number plates I tend to use Velcro because then I can take the plates off when cleaning. If I could ever be bothered to take the bumpers off I would switch to magnets though.

Is the go to place for it.

I got it from my mate who works in a garage they use it on all new cars. Worked perfectly.

How do you guys find the tape for the front plate, where in general the bumper will be slightly curved? I stuck some plates with the pads that came with them and unfortunately the two outer pads have come away from the bumper.

You have to bend the plate to match the bumper curvature. Normally doesn’t require much bending - perhaps a little heat applied to the plate will help, before you bend it, to help it adopt the new shape.

You could for example, place a block of hard foam or similar underneath the plate on a workbench. The size would correspond to the curvature required.
Then place some weights at both ends of the plate. Leave it like this over night and hey presto! It’s unlikely to come away from the bumper now.

Will give that a try. My plates are pressed metal which might mean it’s a bit trickier but hopefully it’ll work!
