Do you think we (students) should pay for our nus card?

just wondered, im not to fussed, £10 for the card but then we get discounts like usual all over so its worth it plus now it has that ISIC people keep going on about so can take it abroad, but just wondered if everyone thought it was good or bad about the fact we now have to pay even though we pay our fees etc.

- discussion brought up with a few of my mates as we just went back into our 4th year today.

It means taking ten pounds out of your pocket and putting it into the NUS pocket...so the question one must ask is who is going to spend it more wisely? A student, or a pack of students?

I'd ordinarily go for the hive mind, but in my experience unification is not a system that works well amongst students, who are too anarchic for it offer much benefit.

The sports card is £8 without it, though...so why not spend the extra £4 and get both :)

£8 = Sports
£10 = Extra
£14 = Extra & Sports

I've seen quite a few places advertise that they'll take the free Democracy card too so I don't think Extra is worth all the hype, but hey - it's only £4...[to those non-fat-lazy-students who'll get a sports card ;p]

As for the "should we pay" debate, I have no idea as I haven't looked into it. My instinct would be that me > hive, though, but I'm not too fussed on the issue either way.

My uni (southampton) has decided to not bother with the NUS card at all (i think its been like that for a few years now? and might have been the first students union to stop NUS affiliation) as they reckon they can spend the £50,000 they would otherwise have to give NUS much more wisely.

I'm inclined to believe them

Most of the places that state x% student discount on production of valid NUS card usually take my Southampton card as being valid anyways :D and I didn't have to pay for it...win win :)

The NUS is a farce indeed. Most places accepts the soton uni card anyway as retailers are non the wiser.

I was considering it, but I guess it really is going to depend on what I buy and how much of a discount I do get for it. I've always used my Uni of Birmingham card as my discount card in Birmingham, as it's an NUS card anyway, though I guess it might change if this Extra thing starts.
