Hey All,

Looking through the main site I can see that there are 8800GT cards with different core/memory speeds, is it worth paying the extra for a quicker card or should I buy the cheaper one and clock it myself with RivaTuner?

My current 8500GT is a complete pile of poo even when clocked to 763/771 :(

Me personally i would prefer to buy the cheaper card and overclock my self, but some people simply don't know how to or are just too scared to overclock a card they have just payed £££ for incase they damage it.

is 2% performance difference worth the cost difference?

:confused::confused::confused:

You mean pre-oc cards?

I would suggest an Zotac Amp at 700/2000 stock gives more than 2% performance increase than a stock vanilla GT. More like 10-15%

And the AMP is no more money than a lot of other vanilla cards.

And not all GT clock high. My BFG OC won't go past 1728 shaders or 1950 memory yet cherry picked EVGA SCC are pretty much all reaching 760/1800+/2100+

As always you can buy the cheapest and get lucky.

My bfg oc is the same it's pot luck even if you buy a pre clocked 700mhz card that doesn't mean the shader is at 1800 they could set the shader to 1750 and have the clock at 700 at £197 delivered the bfg really is a stinker for that price avoid at all costs the bfg if you want a good clocker.
It seems only the first batch of cards were good clockers as usual it's product baiting send out high clockers first then send all the crap ones out so suckers like us buy them thinking they will clock high.

This is the evga ssc spec anything look familiar greebo ? could it be that all the new stock is 1728 limited shader clocks?
700MHz
Stream Processors 112
Memory Clock Speed 2000MHz
Memory Bandwidth 64.0GB/sec
Shader Clock Speed 1728MHz

Could be. Could be the first people to have them and getting 1800+ are just the same as anybody who bought any GT at launch.

I have a feeling the best overclocking cards are going to be the first batch released and if you didn't get one of them, you are more than likely stuck at 1728.

I'm more miffed I can't get my memory past 1950 either.

Will I need a better PSU with a 8800GT, currently I am running the standard 350W unit that came with my case.

Yes, the standard psu's that come with cases tend to not have very good amps on the 12v line.
Look at the Corsair, OCZ and Enermax range, all very solid psu builds.

speaking of overclocking the 8800GT's, I overclocked mine to 670core/1675 shaderclock and left it on the 900mhz ram clock and noticed my temps are around 80-85degrees. Without clocking it didn't actually make any difference though TBH. Anyways is this a high temp i've seen other posts on the internet with temps the same as mine but are they normal for this card?

GPUs can take 100C+, in fact the fan on the 8800GT doesn't spin any faster than 29% until it reaches closer to 100C. Not saying its a healthy temp but 80-85 is pretty normal with these considering the single slot cooler.

If you feel lucky then buy cheapo stock card and clock it yourself, if you want guaranteed clock with warranty then get a pre-clocked one. But in most cases stock cards can reach pre-clocked speed anyway if not more.

450W is ok with this card if you don't have massive oc and loads of peripherals.

My Zotac 880GT clocks to 715 on the core, 970 on the memory and 1750 on the shaders. I don't know whether this is particularly high for this card put it certainly runs hot, around 85 during atitool testing.

ah kewl my temps ok then? Never knew GPU temps got that high, if my CPU was that high i'd be reaching for the wall socket :) Anyways would it be advisable to change it so the fan runs faster the 25%? or just leave it how it is.

If you're not clocking then i'd just leave it as it is otherwise use riva tuner to set the fan speed manually. i set mine to 70% constantly and temp doesn't go over 72C ever.

clocking is overrated :p I've clocked from 600/1500/900 to 765/1855/985 and only get an increase of 6 fps:o

^^ Lots of people are experiencing reduced performance over a certain clock; mine performs better at 700/1750 than 720/1800, so that maybe why you only get 6 fps increase despite high clocks..
