Hi

"The nv4_display driver has stopped working normally. Save your work and reboot the system to restore full display functionality."

I got a new system (System) last week and have installed xp and all the latest drivers. I played bf2 and COD4 at max and was happily gaming with no problems. Yesterday I decided to see what Stalker looks like on my new rig and instantly started having problems. The game keeps jumping, blocks appearing and eventually locking up sometimes with the error message above. I am patched to the latest level and have tried putting all settings to minimum and still it locks up. Thinking it maybe Stalker I picked up a copy of Bioshock and this won't even get through the intro movie without locking up.

After doing some searches they all say to update drivers (though all the posts seemed to be from 2006). I was running on 175.16 so I uninstalled and put the 175.19 drivers on but was no better. I have only recently installed the OS so the system is pretty clean. Does anyone know how to resolve this?

Thanks,
Cheesy.

I'll have another go but last time I used the add/remove and deleted the nv4_disp.dll manually. I'm a bit wary of using the drive cleaner programs.

I tried removing and installing in safe mode (after rebooting) and I still get the same thing. I can get the Bioshock intro to play through if I set at min res with low settings but I should be getting more than that.

The CPU was overclockered as part of the package but the gfx should be at stock (though I'm not sure what the stock settings should be so can't check). Do you think its worth setting the CPU to stock and seeing if that resolves it?

I had installed 3dmark05 (happened to have it) and when I ran it yesterday it got to the end of the 1st test and crashed. Have just run it again and it finished but got what to me seem dismal results:

That can't be right with the system I have is it?

i dont think changing the CPU settings will make too much of a difference.
Not sure if that's a bad score or not....I've not much experience with the 8800 GT's, if I had to guess I'd say its not too bad.

Have you got another GFX card you can try in the system ?

Failing that, it might be worth re-installing the OS and drivers, in this order:

OS
Chipset
GX
Sound
latest directx/updates etc
Anything else

I just found some results from a 8400/8800gts system on 3dmark05 and it was 20745 so I'm not that far off. I have a x1959pro which I could try but I don't really want to get in there and start playing with bits as it was a pre built system. I suppose your right and my last option is to reinstall windows etc - what a pain in the...

I shouldn't have any problems as the nice OC overview says "This system packs enough power to play the latest games at maximum details including AA/AF upto resolutions of 2560x1600 without breaking a sweat including latest DX10 titles such as Bioshock and upcoming Crysis and Unreal games." And I'm only trying to play at 1680x1050

do a re-install.......then take it from there.

I think the overview is a little ambitous, especially with one 8800GT, but it should be fine for the res your at :)

After formatting the wrong HDD and spending ages trying to recover what I could, I have reinstalled windows. I installed the drivers in the order above, and then put Bioshock on and I get the same thing. The intro will play at 1024 x 768 min settings but nudge the settings up or change the res to 1680*1050 and it locks up. In fact it locks up for about 30 seconds when I change the resolution on the options.

I did notice that the CPU's in task manager all seem to max out so I am wondering if it doesn't like the overclocked Q6600 (I know this is the wrong forum). Are there any know quad core/overclock issues with Bioshock? As I'm running a clean install I can't see that this is a software problem so I would think its either the overclock or a hardware issue.

no issues with bioshock and overclocked CPUS (as long as its not too extreme)

only thing to is lower the OC and see what happens, but I think your going to be speaking to OCuK !

I know I'm getting of the Gfx topic. but..

I set my CPU to its default settings and I am still getting the same problem. Was a bit worried that CPU-Z kept jumping from a multiplier of 9x to 6x. Looks like I'm gonna have to speak to the nice OC people, shame its Friday and I'm gonna have to wait till Monday...

Thanks for your help Meronem :)

the multiplier jumping is just intel's speed step technology...when the PC is idle or next to idle, it will lower the mutli and adjust for a slower clock speed, when a lot of CPU time is needed, it will flick back to whatever you set it to.

You can disable it in the bios, it is annoying for me when I benchmark and I want to take a screenshot and CPU-Z says 2600 or something similar !

I would be interested to see what OCuK suggest
