NVIDIA 175.16 results in less performance

I was wondering whether anyone else has experienced this?
I have just 'upgraded' to the latest NVIDIA video card drivers and as a result my 3d Mark 06 results have taken a blow. Basically they have dropped by as much as a few hundred points.

Uninstalling 175.16 and then reinstalling the 169 version puts the 3d Marks back where they should be.

Anyone else experienced this?

I thought you said they give less performance? What games have you tried?

yeah i did. Admittedly I have only used 3d mark 06 to base my comments on (went from 18,557(169) to something like 18,200(175.16)) , so maybe I should have tried a few games, like running the crysis benchmark prog before and after updating.

But if 3d mark 06 goes down -> then I'm not happy.:)

Some people!

So what you are saying is that if the latest driver gives you more fps in your games but less in 3dmark06 score, then you will go back to your old drivers?

Sometimes I think Nvidia should just release a driver for 3dmark06 only which cuts your framerate in crysis in half just for people like you :p:rolleyes:

Why is everyone getting confused????

I never said that 175 gives me more FPS, I said that 175 reduces my 3d mark 06 score by a few hundred points.

I didn't try any games with 175 installed, as after I installed it, I proceeded to running 3d mark where i found that my score went down. Therefore I thought that this driver sucked, so put the drivers back to 169.

I thought that if score's lower in 3d mark then this can only mean lower FPS in games. This may or may not be the case?

Therefore yes, I may try 175 with games (crysis), and if the FPS go up as opposed to 169's FPS I will keep 175 installed.

Now I'm even getting myself confused writing this! :p

Dunno what you are getting at here - this confuses me! :D

No one's confused. Your post says that the 175.16 results in less performance, not a lower e-peen score! ;)

ok.

Well in my eyes lower performance = lower 3d mark 06 score

my assumption probably isn't correct in terms of suggesting that lower 3d marks = lower fps in games???? But who knows unless testing is carried out.

But nonetheless, if 3dmarks go down, then this can't be good in trying to motivate that 175 is a better set of drivers????

why do people obsess about benchmarks!?

I'd rather have better in game performace than higher benchmark scores. i have no need to wave my e-peen at everyone, my system benchmarks pretty well, it's dipped a few times but i've never noticed it in games.

A good set of drivers icreases REAL performance and fixes bugs ETC, i dont think nvidia give a stuff about 3dmarks. Nor do I

Lots of peeps report this driver as being flawed but it bumped up my Crysis FPS considerably.
Looking out to sea from the coast road I get 80+ FPS, before it was 65, turning to look at the jungle I get 50 -55+, before it was 45

XP32 , 9800GX2, playing on high with Cubans custom configs.

yeah i agree in some respects, but generally benchmarks indicate in game performance.

For instance if you're car has a 0-60 of 5.0 seconds, as oppposed to a car which has one of 5.5s, then the first car is likely to have a much higher average speed, and thus probably win the race! same thing with benchmarks surely. The bechmarks are telling you the 0-60, and the average speed is your FPS in games. Maybe a mediocre analogy, but hey!

Anyways, I agree, I need to try these drivers with games (notably crysis) to find out whether it bumps my fps up.

Here ends my posts on this topic.

Benchmarks like 3DMark dont indicate in game performance, for example, I had a 2900XT, it had a higher 3dmark score than my 8800GTS 640, but my 8800GTS 640 performed better in games, the 2900XT only had slightly lower 3dmark score than my 8800GT, but the 8800GT is a lot faster in games.

3DMark does not indicate in game performance, the nearest benchmark to indicating in game performance in Crymark07.

Aye, I agree. I don't however with Crysis being a proper benchmark though as I feel this title favours Nvidia. It was also created on/around the G80. Only benchmarks ran through a good few titles and having an average throughout all the games is the only proper way to see how driver performances work but this is a very tedious task.

@ Skippo. Personally, I wouldn't judge driver performances on the 3dmark benchmark as it's very misleading and in no way a good representation of real world gaming. I've never done it this way, even back with 3dmark2001.

Sorry skippo, but that's one of the worst analogies I've ever heard! :p It doesn't really work like that but I think I know what you're getting at.

What's the point of a benchmark if it doesn't give good indication of how well your machine will run games? The problem is that 3Dmark06 is not relevant to the current generation of gpus. For example, the difference between a GTS G80 and a GTS G92 is very little in 3Dmark06 (500 points?), but in crysis it's worth around 10fps and maybe 20fps in COD4.

Also, a well clocked quad core will get you as much as 3000 points over a similarly clocked dual, but that's not really relevant to what you would see in game.

I just use 3Dmark06 to benchmark my own hardware changes out of interest and checking for stability.

Oh My God 3dmark scores a bit lower, like, Oh My God!

I'll give you a tip, uninstall 3dmark, install TF2 or any other decent games and forget anything ever happened before that point.

the latest drivers dropped my performance across the board. major drops in source games and others too. i havent bothered reinatalling yet though, ive been too busy

rather than start a new thread i thouht i bring this one back to life. updated my drivers to 175.16 a couple of days ago and everything was fine... then this morning go to check e-mail and stuff and i get a graphics error. no beeps, no warnings just get graphics errors on screen and can't see anything.

any way problem solved, just rolled back the drivers in safe mode.

any one else had any problems?
i'm running an intel p4 2.8, geforce 6200 (AGP) and xp 32-bit home ed

At the 18,000+ points mark, a difference of a couple of hundred points on each run of the benchmark is quite expected anyway without doing anything at all to the system.

With Vantage now out, I would expect that both Nvidia and ATI will not focus so much on driver optimisation for 3D Mark 2006, if at all.

Are you serious?

Start enjoying your games rather than stressing about insignificant drops in outdated synthetic benchmarks.

yeah the 175s (using them here) are better than the earlier drivers in games, who gives a rats ass about 3D mark scores anyways, are you seriously gonna be daft enough to go back to older, worse drivers because it gives you a higher 3D mark score, sorry but it sounds totally outrageously stupid
