Nvidia 186.81 Installation Problem

Finally decided to update my Nvidia 9600M drivers today, originally I was on the 186.03 version and I downloaded the newest 186.81 version. As I usually do I uninstall the old drivers, restart the laptop and then install the new ones, then restart again as instructed, though this time when installing the newest drivers it halts at roughly halfway at the "installing new device driver" part and it does not even get to the HD Audio driver part then it does not do anything else, even though task manager reports the CPU being 100% used for the whole time and I waiting for around 20 mins and it still did not move from the halfway point at all and I decided to just end all the tasks & restart. Started from scratch again and the exact same thing happened again. Ended all tasks again and uninstalled the files it had already copied.

Afterwards I just stuck the 186.03 drivers back on which installed fine without a problem. The last thing I tried which I did not really want to do, was to install the new drivers over the old ones (don't ask me why, I just have a weird feeling with drivers that if you install new ones over old ones it can cause conflicts, not sure if its still true?!?!) So I decided to take the risk and install the new ones over the old ones... Presto! The new drivers installed fine without a problem!

The question is why from a clean driver install, do the new drivers not install properly and halt at halfway?? I had the same problem before when I first installed the 186.03 drivers back in July but after ending the installation task and then starting again for the second time it worked and I never thought about it again until today! Has anybody else experienced the same problem as I have and is it safe to install new drivers over the old ones?

Thanks - Liam
