NVIDIA 4000 Series

They should have called is 4080SR. SR equaling Stingy Ringy :D
Hah, yes. I've agonised over this for too long and eventually concluded that it was the best option regardless of being bent over and done with no lube. Nvidia clearly know what they're doing, nudging people towards the higher end with their design choices - I'll hang my head in shame for a while. :D

Annoyingly, CUDA is useful to me on the odd occasion, anything less than 16GB VRAM is a no-no and I wanted something that will last me at least another 5 years at 1440p. That doesn't leave me with much choice really and the Nvidia feature set is hard to ignore.

Now for the agonising over what monitor to get. :)

I would wait, if spending £1500 plus on a graphics card that many say is already obsolete, debatable, but will definitely be obsolete in the next 8-9 months, so not even a full year of having the "best card".

If its a case of you have to buy a Graphics card, say due to a fault, then consider a lower tier card for the moment, like the 4070 Ti Super or 4080 Super, though depends on prices in Italy, and put what is saved aside and use it for a 5090 when its released.
A 4090 is obsolete? Obsolete?
Seriously?
Just because it's not the best of the best doesn't make it obsolete. It'll probably be around the same performance as a 5080 no? Or are 5080 going to be obsolete at launch?

Same as if someone bought a 4090 back on the day of it release there was no knowing if nvidia was going to release a higher TI/super/Titan/etc version 6 months or so later

The only time I can see it mattering is if a new locked feature ships that only the latest gen can utilise. At this point nobody knows what features the 50 series is bringing.

I think another perspective that is often missed, is the fact that even today, our CPUs are too slow to fully take advantage of a 4090, sometimes still bottlenecked even at 4k...

I game at 1440p, because its 240hz, curved and I love my Samsung G7, never enjoyed a monitor as much, and 1440p is just a great resolution to push high frames while still looking great, besides my eyes are 40+ years old, I don't even need AA let alone 4k...

Some bottlenecks occur due to lack of proper "next gen" implementations. Give it some serious RT/PT and won't be limited anymore :)

Yeah it's a stunning looking game. It's also one of the best engines/games for vram management as DF/Alex evidenced with the buffer management system they implemented, although there is a lot of copy and paste of assets which somewhat becomes quite obvious the more you play, reminded me of days gone here.

I would recommend using DLSS balanced over FSR 3 even at the highest quality preset as the IQ is better as per usual (you also don't get the issues with the UI/HUD elements which is very distracting) as well as avoiding random weird frame pacing issues.

Make sure you switch out the DLSS preset for preset C though as the default preset D has ghosting issues.

I haven't watched DF's video, but it doesn't stream as much as it could/should during gameplay. CPU also pretty chill, so no reason to be vRAM bottlenecked while not doing that...

As for DLSS, I just selected DLSS and performance with fixed (for the upscaler setting). Seems good, but performance can drop into 40fps+ in some areas (5760 x1080). Some proper FG and ray reconstruction (perhaps SER) would have helped.

With that said, I remembered Crysis 3 so I've jumped a bit into the vegetation levels. Damn it looks impressive for a 11 years old game! I actually like it a bit more due to it's dense and dynamic grass. Avatar can be impressive where lots of vegetation is around as well (wish No Man Sky had something like this), but overall it's an odd duck. It has some really simple geometry in places, water looks off, don't know... It lacks consistency, at least in the opening part. Could have used some more polish.

4080S arriving tomorrow. I'll be honest, it stings a bit but I rarely treat myself and this will bring me a lot of joy.

Given Nvidia forms a chunk of my investments, I've deluded myself into thinking I'm paying myself back in some sort of convoluted way. :D

Don't overthink it - just enjoy the card. Your hobby will now bring you more pleasure, that's the main point :)

lol 4GB and 64bit... or 6GB and 96bit workstation laptop GPUs... not sure how many workstation users want 4GB and 6GB....

One thing that's shocked me (what with being a bit out of touch with newer hardware) is the temperatures and cooling on these new cards. The days of being able to fry bacon on your GPU seem to be well and truly over. :o

I ended up getting the MSI Gaming X SLIM version (LOL if that's slim then so is Vanessa Feltz!) and the cooler on this thing is insane. As soon as load drops, the temps fall off a cliff, and it doesn't even get toasty. Whacking a frame limiter on means it's super quiet.

Well cards before were 2 slots thick at max now they are 4 slot +... So should hope not at the size and cost of them now and most on way smaller gpu die sizes than before too.

Given GPU Heatsink evolution expect the RTX 5090 to be......

Gonna need planning permission before installing them if they keep getting bigger. You'd think pcie connectors breaking would be a wake up call to the sheer mass of these things just getting out of hand.
