Can my 8GB's hold on at 1440P, now that is the question, 12GB seems really slim for such a massively faster GPU though?

Nvidia are counting on people realising 12GB isn't enough for 2022 going into 2023 so more will part their cheeks for the 1100 quid 16GB model.

Yeah I agree, it was going well till they announced prices, remember a 12gb 4080 is really a 4070 so is a 90+% increase while the true 3080 successor the 4080 16gb is a 70% price increase over a 3080.

Its much more than just 4gb of ram. The 16gn 4080 has 2000 mroe cuda cores, runs faster, has faster memory and will be over 30% faster than then cut down 4080. Its easier if you think of th 4080 12gb as a 4070 card.
