NVIDIA 4000 Series

Unless there has been other posts made by @Gibbo since, in regards to any possibility of pre-orders, he did suggest that if they happen at all they would be limited....

(link follows to post made recently by Gibbo)

Sounded more like there wouldn't be any at all, which I think is the best for all concerned.

You are out of touch of reality where 99% of desktop owners only use a single pcie device, almost no one uses sound cards, network cards etc anymore the GPU is not meant for small niche of people such as yourself who use multiple devices
Is there actual data for this or assumptions, I know its clear most people use onboard, not many have capture cards, but 99%?

The PC case and board design has historically been done to cover people not in the "most people" bracket, we have always had extra slots on motherboards, more sata ports etc. This shift in to forcing people to specific build types is a road down to fixed spec PC's.

Hi everybody, sorry if this has been covered already, but have OCUK announced whether they'll be doing preorders again with the 4000 series, or have they been scarred for life after the 3000 series?

Pretty sure Gibbo said no after the absolute disaster last time. A lot of preople never got their card at all (they were sold at higher prices to new buyers in many cases - ie straight to miners by the pallet load) and many were waiting up to a year.

Gibbo said they would never do pre-orders again. I dont blame them it was a disaster. People pre-paid for cards and they waited that long the AIB's cancelled the SKU's so the card they ordered no longer existing and the etailers had to sort out the mess left by the AIB's.

So I would say no. Some other way will be sought if at all. I would think definitely no with the 4xxx series as again the expected numbers available will be small especially as Nvidia intend to sell the 3xxx series alongside the 4xxx series.

The industry is not honourable, OCUK's suppliers effectively supplied them on a best effort's basis only, under those conditions no retailer can offer a reasonable pre order system.

It wasnt Gibbo but another OCUK staff member, on one particular day he posted some extra details on how OCUK have to haggle for stock, such as no price commitments (so if price changes by the time its delivered they pay new price), no fulfilment commitments, I am not sure but possibly even vulnerable to exchange rate fluctuations if stock is purchased on credit and before its paid for as usually paid for in US dollars?

Its effectively the wild west.

Rather than a preorder I'd just offer a queue. First come first served as long as stock lasts. No money involved, no refunds and people will just have to wait. No worse than a free-for-all when they launch and website crashing etc.

I feel like they'd be setting themselves up for many thousands of people in the queue; then each one has to be contacted and verified that they still want to make the purchase. How long do they hold an item if a person doesn't answer the phone on first try? An hour/day/week?

EVGA did it but they asked for a deposit (I think), problem was by the time you got allocated a card many people had already bought one from somewhere else or just didnt bother replying and buying it as it was 6-9 months after joining the queue.

I am sure OCUK will come up with a new way it just wont be pre-order if its limited supply like last time.

When stock arrives announce it on the forums and give 24hrs before going live on website, then anyone who is serious can buy and if they miss the boat and stock sells out then they will have to wait until the next delivery and another 24hrs notice before the stock will go live again. also limit it to one card per order.
this way all stock gets sold and no pre order's waiting in the wings as price's will change as exchange rate fluctuates.

I think for the 4000 series you should pay a £100 deposit to pre-order the card and you get assigned to a pre-order queue. Then you can pay another £10 and get your queue position randomly changed so it can go higher or lower. Could be fun to add gambling to this process if it’s going to be like the 3000 series where it takes months to fulfill all orders!

With the price of electricity I don't think many people will be too keen on buying 400w cards. for those people that have already got a 3000 series, I think many will skip the next generation

EVGA didn't ask for a deposit. You had absolutely zero chance of getting a card from them via their queueing system unless you signed up super early though. I signed up for the 3080 FTW3 queue a couple of weeks after launch and to this day haven't been offered a chance to buy one. Last June they emailed me to say I'd be moved to the LHR queue because the original model was now end of life. Nothing since then. As far as I can tell, EVGA have practically abandoned the European market as far as GPUs go during this generation and 95% of their stock goes to North America.

If that's the case the 5000 series will be even more power hungry by going buy the trends.

some of the other shops did queues for buying PS5's, they took so long to come through you could guarantee get a console by just watching the drop channels. I think behind the scene they would get in say 100 consoles, X amount to display stock, X amount to pre-order and so on.

GPUs will have the same issue, X to in shop stock, X to online stock, X to system builds

Whether we get a flood of mining cards will be the biggest factor, that will take away a lot of new buyers if they can pick up a "cheap" 3060-3080 class card.

I've read people managed to get cards.

Thats the reason why OCUK wont offer a queuing system. ;)

yeah thats not happened this time round must be mining is still profitable. One of the previous times there was a flood of RX 290's when mining dipped to not being profitable.

I guess many of the cards were bought by people who dont just mine but needed a new card too.

Do you really believe people who spend £2k+ on a 400W GPU really care about a few pence extra per day when under load? Which is likely under 8 hours a day...
