In other words, whatever you do, you will lose money over time. Investment is also risky as going badly you might lose all of it (or be locked out for a long time). Facing that, lots of people just rather spend it now whilst they have it and worry about the future when it comes.

Those burying their heads in the sand and spending as normal now, will be getting a very nasty shock very soon enough. The old advice of having 6 months outgoings saved as an emergency, simply will not be enough. I'm currently looking at having at least 2 years worth of outgoings in easy access in case of a job loss now. I used to have a separate "luxury" savings pot, but I'm incorporating that into my emergency access "fund" now, at least until I hit 2 years worth outgoings.
