NVIDIA 4000 Series

Thanks to the well-known power spike issues I'm not sure you're right, unless they were running SLI.

I was running off my old seasonic 750w for a while. I eventually passed this onto my test rig when I upgraded to a 850w phanteks. I did read quite a few 3080 owners on existing units, plenty of them if you read back on the threads spanning the forum! ;)

All depends on what you had in there before. Some used 1000w overkill units.

What I am saying is you wont get away with this by the sounds of it from the Ada top end.

Well, I had been running SLI so did have an 850W PSU :), but the one before that was 460W. And while 460W is nominally sufficient for a RTX 3080 and a more modest CPU if you go on power drawn from the wall, the power spike issue means that it is most certainly not sufficient.

I would never try it even on the strongest of brands that. The 3080 states a 750w supply needed, and while I could bend the rule somewhat to a reputable branded 550/650w.. a 460w is never enough really for total system power (assuming you want some headroom and max out around the 80% rule). So this brings us back to the 4080/90 with more power draw than Ampere on the face of it, people will need the larger units. Luckily they will probably be in stock, unlike during the pandemic where it went nuts and they were either oos or overpriced.

Precisely; that's thanks to the power spike issue. So people getting a 3080 will have needed to buy a new PSU.
See below:
I didn’t. Still running a 650W Superflower Leadex III Gold. No issues. With a 5950x.

Is what I was saying! @Quartz this wont be possible on Ada if they draw more power than Ampere. Forced upgrade time, might be good to invest in PSU company shares.

Oh I know if I go for a 4000 series a PSU upgrade is definitely needed. I bought a 3080 in the hope it would do me for 3-4 years.

Yeah it was discussion with Quartz that albeit not really sufficient, many upgraders still are on less than 750w units. He stated above "im not sure your right" but you proved my point. ;)

Lets say the 4080 card power is 400w the bare minimum nvidia will still advertise will still be 750w.

Nvidia need to take into account £40 ‘750W’ no name or Chinese PSU’s so will generally over spec just in case. As said I have no issues with my quality 650W unit. In reviews it even supplied nearly 720W before shutting down with overcurrent protection and protected the PC.

Yikes!

Well known seller/buyer are offering £585 for a 3090 FE now and the 4070 hasn't even been announced yet   @TNA

Seems my original joke of offering £300/350 with a half eaten ham sandwich might not be far of now

Don't forget those dodgy 750W units have way less amps on the 12v rail than a quality 650W one, ie. basically 450W psu's.

If you see 3090s for £585 send me a PM with the sales link and I don't mean fake ebay links with zero ratings and I will take them all, cheapest I saw a 3090 go for was £780 for a mined on since it was owned an RTX 3090 iChill purchased by @sgoaty on AV forums and a member here too.

Also cheapest 3080ti so far has been £700 MSI 3080 ti Ventus 3X and that was a brand new one still sealed that was sold to @Soulja at the same forum above and then resold on here on our MM by @Soulja :- https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/msi-3080-ti-ventus-3x.18953165/ .

Cheapest other 3090s I saw go for £1050 and they were FE models and owned since release day and of course had thermal pads replaced and thermal paste because they were mined on too. Not paying £1k for a mined on 3090 for sure or anywhere near £700 for a mined on 3080 ti.

Mined on cards are worthless to me and any that have been opened up by the owners before as they could have screwed something up and if they are still in warranty they won't be if opened up as all the warranty seals are broken.

I love how everyone asks on members market if the card has ever been mined on xD how would ever know if has or hasn’t?

Miners replace the thermal pads and thermal paste on most of the cards as they over heat otherwise and throttle so limits their income. So any card missing the warranty stickers is a good sign of it and also if the thermal pads are a different colour than a teardown shows for that card. ;) Some try to be clever and get new warranty stickers or take the original ones off carefully and reapply them if they are not the type that leave half the sticker on the card with VOID VOID all over the area.

I don't mind a mining card at all ( obviously) especially as I'll have the remainder of the 2 year CEX warranty :)
Yup you were lucky with that purchase as it had CEX warranty remaining on it, so covered yourself and the owner didn't take it apart and had the warranty stickers on it, make sure not to remove them as CEX will not buy cards that have had the warranty stickers removed or honour the remaining warranty they gave.

Thanks for that I wasn't aware that was the case.

My previous point I was making is for me there is no motivation to buy a 4070 if its 30% faster but also 75% more expensive. I may as well keep the 3070. On the plus side there isn't really a game that my PC struggles with right now.

My 3070 had been mining 24/7 for a year until recently, electric is too expensive now so not worth it. If I want some bitcoin I'll just buy some, or something., its the future! 50/50, flip a coin haha. I could try selling my card to other miners if I tell them its never been used for gaming!
