NVIDIA 4000 Series

4090 was a steal. There, said it.

Surely when cards are this expensive you'd be pricing them more in line with their performance. Can't see them selling - I think they'll be another run on 4090's to sell out at those 4080 prices.

4090 isn't a steal... it's more like pure theft at their msrp. Coming from a guy that owns 3 x 3090s and purchased 5 of them and 2 of them ended up in systems for family and friends. I purchased 4 for myself originally as I wanted to build 2 workstations but had problems sourcing another MSI x570 Godlike and ones I could find were close to £1200-£1500 for a motherboard that would allow NVLINK to work with 4 slot spacing. So ended up with one workstation and 2 spare cards, one went into the HTPC and other in a family members pc and then purchased another hoping I will get a x570 Godlike again and that ended in a friends system in the end too.

4090s should be called 4080ti not 90 at best, they are nothing more than gaming cards now. Where the 3090/ti were real pro use cards with NVLINK and allowed memory and CUDA pooling.. These 4090s are a downgrade for a 90 class card and even a 3090/ti was a downgrade from real 90 class cards before as they were all dual gpu cards on one card with sli, which means 4 x gpus on 2 cards.

AMD this round for sure.

For a gaming card it's a no brainer the 7900xt and xtx as long as retailers behave themselves with the pricing and if not well they can enjoy sitting on AMD stock too as they will soon have pyramids worth of 40 series  at current store prices.

If I was going by pure msrp for a gaming card only..

It would 100% be the AMD this time, coming from someone that always buys top cards. So Nvidia can go rot in hell really this time and they deserve the worst coming to them from their shareholders and the tech community. Karma has already struck them as we have seen and yet more to come just..

Also Asus are getting a taste of Karma too with their TUF range the cards with the worst melting issues, so they decided to profit on it and make a special STRIX Edition.. with built in VBIOS 3 position switch to pick OC, Quiet.... or MELT.

I know it's a joke but that box art reminds me of Point Of View branded cards back in the day, I miss them, did they go out of business?

...perhaps the leaked 4080 benchmarks are not correct. The performance delta between the 3080 and 3090 didn't scale with the extra cuda cores/transistors, so maybe the 4080 is within a high-single-digit to low-teens window of the 4090. Also AMD is still miles behind on ray tracing, and their new flagship is only going to compete with the 4080. This pricing puts the 4080 in between the 7900 XTX and the RTX 4090.

I can't wait for the third party 4080 reviews!

Also, I can empathise with folk who are upset at the pricing of high end GPUs in the last two (or three?!) generations, but the vitriol is misdirected. TSMC has a monopoly on leading edge nodes and demand has been spectacular in the last few years....some of the cost comes from TSMC's price increases, which has pushed their gross margin higher, but the capex required to build a leading edge fab has also gone up a lot as well...and only ASML can build the EUV lithography machines that make this possible. And the 5nm process node will only have until 2024 before it's overtaken by TSMC 2nm and Intel 20a, so TSMC only have a brief period where this tech will have pricing power, after which it'll be trailing edge tech. Making tiny transistors is just really expensive! If you don't believe me, go and have a look at gross margins and capex at Nvidia and TSMC over the last few years...

No disguised swearing

Hadn't thought about the SLi until you said. As a gamer, I'd not really comprehended the professional viewpoint where support and features have been dropped.

First sentence I was taking the 9i55.

The only thing we should be doing with current gpu prices is :-

Customers need to sing this to these companies that make the hardware and the retailers taking advantage too that think we are fools...

It's the only way it will stop.

They do have a monopoly on nodes at the moment but just for one second the wafer is nothing to do with GPUs costing this much and that's a fact, There was a report out recently that Nvidia's margins on the 4090 is 70% pure profit, A 4090 literally cost about £4-500 to produce absolute tops, That's everything, These components cost pittance, They are making massive profits, AMD also not just Nvidia, AMDs are even cheaper to make.

I have to wonder what evga is playing at with their 4090, they didn't just send Jay the card, the card is fully working but they can't call it a 4090 legally and now evga is writing custom software and bios for Jay to install

Like, why?
