Not really as they can soon discontinue support on older cards by changing the way it works or adding some new feature like they did with the 3000 series despite them having the optical flow accelerator.

You still need them going to have large install base for RT/PT, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

I think the 4090 is going to age well, it could be another thorn in Nvidia's side. With AMD sitting out the high end next gen, Nvidia doesn't need to do much for next gen if it were not for the 4090 but due to the 4090 being so quick they have to least beat it.

If the 4090 didnt exist, Nvidia could just come out with a 5080 thats 20% faster than the 4080 and people will eat it up, but because of the 4090 they cant do that now if they want to make money.

If Nvidia does that anyway then they can't price up the 5080 or its sales will be cannibalised by second hand 4090 sales, which is exactly what happened with the rtx2000 series, where buyers rejected it and bought second hand 1080ti's instead

yes that is true in the historical sense but what they could also do is keep selling the 4090 and give mediocre uplift on the 5080 (like they did with the 2080 series) and price the 5090 to the moon.... unfortunately. Then when they want to wrap up the 4090 they drop a 5080Ti or something like that.

what Nvidia seem to want is to make you pay more for more performance and give as little away as possible

it all depends imho on what performance they are getting on the full fat die(s) and what competition exists

If they do another Turing they will get slaughtered. Question is will they care? Their mindshare is so strong that they could withstand even 2 gens of being slaughtered and still come out smelling like roses once they release something good.

Nvidia are well and truly cemented in now with their vast resources and turnover, only way for AMD to get more marketshare would be for government intervention or for Nvidia to just leave the consumer gfx market (both possible at this point). AMD will be fighting with Intel over the scraps :D

Lots to be made in AI tbf so AMD/Intel will also be targeting that and making plenty of $$$ too (Intel just announced their move into a dedicated AI chip).

Intel took 3 percentage points from Nvidia in late 2022 putting them at 3% marketshare, in late 2023 Intel had 1% marketshare, AMD took the other 2 percentage points off Intel.
So far Intel are fighting with Nvidia, and then AMD take what Intel gained from Nvidia.

Intel are how AMD take marketshare from Nvidia... :D

AMD doesn't really try. To me it looks like they make a more pronounced arch change when a next gen console comes out, meaning they use R&D founds from Sony and Microsoft and then just ride the wave for a couple of generations. They're happy to put in at little as possible and collect as much as possible. I'm not expecting anything radical until next gen, so PS6 time frame

Yeah because AMD designing the first chiplet based gpu that was in the works from 2017 was just them phoning it in and 'not really trying' right?

It's relevant to your comment that they 'don't really try'. It would have been much easier to go monolithic intsead of working out how to make a chiplet based gpu.

Fair enough, but keep in mind they already have experience from the CPU department, this isn't something spawned to be a GPU thing.

There is bleedover from the cpu side they have said in terms of both hardware and software. Interests me to see what future iterations of it can do given what they achieved on the cpu front .
