NVIDIA 5000 SERIES

If you need to sell to buy or are worried about losing a couple of hundred quid on resale then its questionable whether you should be buying a 5090 in the first place.
4090 owners will not lose a couple of hundred quid on a 5090 upgrade no

4090s sell for an average of 1400-1500 used, I suspect that will be a bit lower closer to the end of the month, 5090s will be 2 grand and aftermarket cards will be 2200 average so that an additional 500 quid to top up to FE and around 700 to get a strix or Suprim line card

aint cheap to get a few extra frames and bragging rights

I think it's very clear that the 5xxx series is aimed at those on 3xxx or below GPU's, for NVidia anyone on a 4xxx series upgrading is simply a bonus. I'd say even those on the 3xxx series want to consider if they need to upgrade, if the games they play are at acceptable framerates with almost everything on max settings then I'd strongly consider holding off.

I do wonder if the 5xxx series might be short lived and we'll end up with 6xxx series sooner than expected, there are rumours circulating of them bringing the launch forward although these seems more likely with the ranges intended for datacenters.
Well said.

The only 1999 I want to see when it comes to graphics cards is the year. $300 for a DDR GeForce 256, and I was playing games with an integrated ATi Rage Pro that used 8MB of the system RAM, and couldn't have been happier...

I was all set to grab a 5080 but if that's all they can muster then I'm not so sure now. A 2nd hand 4080/4090 seems a much better buy, but I'll be waiting for reviews to see what's what.

Help us AMntel, you're our only hope! And yes, they should combine, because Arc needs a ridiculous X3D CPU to perform it's best.
1999 I fondly remember rushing down to Dixon to get the 3DFX Voodoo 3 AGP for £180 brand new at release, no queuing just in the shop get graphics card and off home to play on Quake 3 Arena on a 75hz crt monitor , much simpler times back then

2025: £2000+ for a 5090 to play games on my 480hz Oled :(

But when gpu load is near full, it consumes way more power then the 30 series

Really depends on the game strangely enough

Here is a rtx3090 pulling just under 400w in final fantasy 16

I'm currently playing this game at 4k unlocked framerate, GPU sitting at 100% utilisation and for whatever reason the power draw doesn't go over 300w

Remarkably small heatsink of the RTX 5090 FE

And a chart where Nvidia claims not only is it cooling 600w but it's doing so with under 35db of noise

And the guy at Nvidia who designed this cooler looks like he's just 25 years old

30-35db quoted is quite a big range - wonder if they're accounting for variations in ASIC quality/voltage on each card, or fan issues.

If it's closer to 30db, I'll get a FE, as no point having a huge Astral if it's just as loud as the FE with 4 fans.

Yep - and whats worse is, £2500 in 1999 money is £1128, so really a new graphics card today should be around £400-500 (If £180 back then) - shows how much we're getting mugged over!

I think (I'm being sarcastic here) there are a just a few more components on the 4090/5090 than on this old classic

Imagine comparing the BOM (bill of materials) of a 5090 vs a Voodoo 3 3000 (including the cooling solutions, I/O, everything).

So you want all the technological advancements over the last 25 years for free?

Loads of things cost significantly more than they did 25 years ago but are also significantly better. Cars, mobile phones, TVs...

Or accounting for room temperature? Not everyone's room is cool

The world first vapor chamber is quite cool as well

3D chambers are not new; the world first part is that the heatpipe wicks run through the chamber
