NVIDIA 5000 SERIES

whos all still getting one ? seems like a good upgrade form the 30 series but not so for the 40 users .

My impression was that it’s now more useable than before as the ‘it adds latency’ issues that plagued the DLSS3 implementation have been largely resolved… but yes, it still really ought to have high base FPS and therefore to make use of the MFG you’re going to want to be pushing at least 60fps native and have a 240hz monitor. Even then, 80fps native + 3x FG or 120fps native + 2x FG are probably better options than 4x FG…. Until higher refresh 4k monitors show up.
My quick test in cp2077 on 4090 revealed some improvements in how it feels latency wise for sure with the new algorithm - it's much more usable now it feels, but that's with over 60fps of base after DLSS. So that's a good thing. I still wouldn't play any game with 30fps with or without FG - I would drop some details to get to 60. Nvidia AI VP also said on the video that min. FPS advised to turn it on didn't change from DLSS 3 to 4 and stays the same.

Further power testing. RTX 5090 power usage can spike up to 900watts

F for my RM850x.

Has DLSS4 frame gen actually released yet? I thought it was coming out on 30 Jan, I may be wrong though.

I gather that the transformer model for upscaling has been released, not sure about the improved frame gen though.

And yes I’d agree that the examples used by Nvidia are misleading… or at the very least there are major latency compromises when starting with a crappy base fps that make the ‘5079 = 4090’ promises ridiculous.

Realistically; if you're a casual gamer playing Witcher 4, with DLSS & 4x FrameGen from a 60-80+FPS (base) so 200+ with FrameGen then you're going to get really nice performance.

If you're competitive gaming CS2, or whatever your flavour of multiplayer shooter is, then you're going to want 240-400 FPS base, and you won't be turning FrameGen on.

I bought a 4070ti super this week to go in my new 9800 build

Actually did the build in anticipation of the 5000 series my current build was a 2080ti i7 system due an upgrade now

5000 series seems a be meh to me now its a marginal upgrade which wont be cost effective given all the faff

If I could get a 5080 FE retail sure it would be better than the 4070tiS at 800 but not that much better as the 4070 can be overclocked and will have DLSS4

I can not one bit about multiframe I don’t see the use for comp you want native 120++ fps, maybe if you are doing 4k ultra setting on something like Indiana it can be used but you need a high baseline FPS for multi to be effective (say 60+) and so I see it as a novelty for now

DLSS4 coming to 4000s was a big factor in deciding not worth the fuss to try and get a 5080

Good luck to everyone trying next week

I think i'll hold out for the 4090 -> 6080 upgrade. Hopefully an 80+% improvement in time for GTA 6 :D

Coming from a 3080Ti I think it's a valid upgrade for me, it's basically double the performance of my current card.

With a AX1600i I should be fine with the massive spikes (fortunately), but do I go 5080 or just push the boat out and go for the max possible with the 5090...?

Cp2077 had a big patch yesterday and contains all the new toys to play with. Drivers with new app to replace it in other games haven't got released yet.

I went from a 3080 -> 4090 as it was double the performance. It has been glorious. I do think the 5090 resale value in 2 years won't look so pretty when the 6090 with an expected higher performance gain comes out. Worth bearing in mind if you're buying it to be 'futureproofed'. Otherwise just get the 5080 and upgrade in two years.

As long as you have an ATX3.0 PSU then it should be able to cope with the micro spikes.

I was a victim of this issue with the 3090. I just couldn’t figure out why I was getting constant power outs in games… it was only about a year after the 3090 release that they fessed up that the power rating system didn’t account for the transient spikes and they released the new 3.0 standard. I got a new 3.0 PSU and it was absolutely fine. Such an annoying thing to happen… it drove me loopy!

The other thing to consider is the noise / heat. 5080 is still in the race for me if I get a 5090 and it’s too noisy (whine).

Does it definitely include the new FG algorithm for 40 series cards? @Nitefly and I were discussing this last night. I feel as though latency has improved even from a low base fps of around 60. But it's not 100% clear from the patch notes.

I think either a 5080 or used 4090 if you can get one for a similar price is where the smart money is at, while the 5090 is the fastest card its very underwhelming in terms of efficiency and performance scaling.

Generally if you’re buying the cutting edge that is the case unfortunately.

Daniel said very clearly multiple times that he still thinks this is only for high refresh monitors, 240Hz+, as with low FPS it's revealing all kinds of glitches and issues. Generally, same as standard FG has always been, nothing changed in the regard.
True, as long as you've got that good and a decent base frame rate you're working with, good to go, at least for CP2077 anyway, other games we may discover have more issues which they didn't have access to for review.

Alan Wake 2 was more inconsistent and had a bigger latency hit.
