NVIDIA 5000 SERIES

The 4090 coming from the 3090 was a really great improvement. The 5090 not so, over 700W for a extra 15% - 30%. Have to do some real mental gymnastics to view this gen as anything but a disappointment in any metric, price, performance, power consumption.
But your looking at it from upgrading from a 40 series. What about us who have a 30 or 20 series?

Nvidia have discounted the 40 series so what other options do we have?

for this reason if you have a 4000 series card its not worth the upgrade unless the upgrade does not cost. The 4090 not worth upgrading from and the 4080 is even worse unless you go 5090 which is one of the most overpriced gpu in history.

So the way I'm looking at it, is as a new generation of graphics cards, that is probably the most disappointing Nvidia have ever launched. What generation a potential buyer is coming from, isn't relevant in that context. In regards to your options, a cheap used GPU would provide far more bang for buck.

Until I feel it for myself, I'm not going to know one way or the other.

I already know I'm not going to detect the 8ms (or so) latency penalty that MFG adds on top of regular FG. Even if I could perceive it, I'd likely write it off as trade-off for doubling framerate/fluidity. I've also got the distinct advantage of playing on a controller so latency is basically part of my personage at this point.

Side note: There's been plenty of latency and fake frame discussion in this thread but I haven't seen anyone touch on which feels worse: watching a game at 60fps or playing a game at 60fps (particularly if it's dipping from above the 100s or you're used to the fluidity of 200+ fps). Tongue in cheek here but I'd rather a latency penalty than watch a PowerPoint slideshow.

Personally, coming from a 2080ti and seeing how this launch is shaping up, I'm going to look a bagging a cheap second hand deal on a 4080 or 4090 (missed a couple on MM already).

I'd still get a massive boost whichever I managed to get, plus probably half the pot that I'd built up for a 5090 would still be there ready to take forward for an upgrade in the future.

I've had 2 Asus laptops (more expensive models), and a GPU - every time I contacted their support, even with just simple question to confirm which LCD panel is in my specific laptop (as there were 2 versions on there market with different power use), I never was able to get any good responses and generally their support was always one of the worst I've ever encountered. Which was later confirmed by GN investigation and supposedly they were working on fixing it. And yes, my graphics card was shot and one of the laptops had issues too - I've sold them all and won't touch Asus again. MSI on the other hand never had any issues with support.
I personally have never had any issues with ASUS products, apart from some dead pixels on a PG32UQX. I use their motherboards and I guess I’m just used to the layout so always buy them, again never had an issue.

Thing is, I always buy our full system from OCUK because I don’t have time to build them (and would probably snap something) and their customer service over the 3 year period is excellent. I’ve only ever had one issue with a Corsair PSU and they replaced it straight away. It sort of cuts out me having to deal with the manufacturers such as ASUS if anything were to blow up.

Yeah, from my past experiences working in IT retail and dealing when RMAs, I've never had issues with Asus using that route, hence not surprised about ocuk being able to get good support from them. It's just the direct contact that sucked horribly, as it's likely been outsourced and cheap.

nvidia have stopped making 4090's. I don't want to buy used. you can run the 5090 at 450w and get 3 more fps than stock.

My Asus 2080ti had to be RMA'd within a week due to constant crashes from defected memory chips, but this ended up being Nvidia's fault and Asus replaced the card 1 week later
Thing I don’t like with all manufacturers is that they can give you “refurbished” replacements. I don’t like the thought of getting a used unit in return for a brand new one.

would it not be factory refurbished, ie better condition than most were at before experiencing issues?

I agree. My Dell OLED monitor replacement is refurbished, but it is actually a newer revision, so in this case I don’t mind. If it was in poor condition i would ask for another replacement. I think we have a right to expect the replacement item to be in the same condition as the item we send back.

I see another store has list prcing today, surely at least some of them are place holders, only 4 cards listed though

Asus RTX5090 Astrial Graphics Card - £3000
Gigabyte RTX 5090 Aorus Master Graphics Card £3000
MSI RTX 5090 Vanguard LAUNCH EDITION - £9999.00
Palit RTX 5090 Gamerock - £9999.00

They must be holding prices as they also have

Asus RTX 5080 Prime - £3000
Palit RTX 5080 Gamerock - £9999.00
MSI RTX 5080 Liquid Suprim - £9999.00

100%

I guess some people aren’t as ocd as me. I’d be horrified.
