NVIDIA 5000 SERIES - ***NO COMPETITOR HINTING***

well this freaking sucks =/ I was hoping the 5080 would have a bit more chutzpah it could be politley called a 5070ti which means the 5070ti and 5070 must be worse >_>

Positives = amazing engineering (in particular the size and cooling, great for a SFF build)
Negatives = minimal/no uplift over the previous gen (CU's and VRAM)

I wonder if Nvidia will release a cheaper Super like the 40 series? An identical card (with a Super badge slapped on) at 800 quid would be interesting.

At the asking price, it's probably even more DOA than the original 4080 at 1200 quid was.

This has put me on quite a mind journey.

Coming from a 3080 was likely to upgrade this gen and thought I'd try and get a 5090. Reviews out for that convince me it's not worth it so I decide 5080 would be the one. Now the reviews for the 5080 are so mediocre I find myself leaning to 5090 again. I'll try for 5090FE and if no success just wait another generation. Disappointing effort.

The 4090 was not a typical 90 series though the gap between the 4080 and 4090 is huge compared to the 3080 and 3090.

back in the day the xx80 used to be a cut down same-chip as the xx90 (or titan or ti), then they switched to using a smaller chip (e.g. what would have been the xx70 chip) as the xx80, then they went with samsung for the 3090 and they messed up so badly on yields that they basically gave nvidia a bunch of crap 3090 chips for free, so we got the 3080 back to being a cut down 3090 chip... then they went back to smaller chip for xx80

so it depends on your point of view (basically how old you are or how long your memory is)

I mean, if you go back to the geforce 9 series then you had 4-5 models of 9800 (GT (both G92B and G92 based), GTX, GTX+, GX2) all based off the same G92 chip and then the 9600, 6-7 models, some of which based off the smaller G94, but 2 models based off a cut down G92 chip)

basically nvidia have been all over the place on using big or small chips and cutting them down for different tiers of cards

Am I cruel for tricking a guy at work that it was the 30th and he should be frantically F5ing to get his 5090. I then setup a legit meeting for him to attend and let it run over by 5 minutes. He fell for it and looked very anxious and agitated at 2:02pm and now won’t talk to me :)

I told him I wouldn’t report him for some of the foul language and names he called me :D
